Has anyone had a destination wedding?

Kaitlyn , on February 9, 2018 at 4:34 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8

Hello all future brides!

I'm wondering if any of you have had a destination wedding or are planning one. Are you finding it easy or difficult? My fiance and I are getting married in Ireland and I'm wondering if its difficult to plan a destination wedding. We are going back over this summer to view venues and set a date. But I also have to deal with all the legal things about how to handle getting married in a different country.

I had a destination wedding in Australia. It was difficult especially with communication with the vendors due to the time difference and the fact that Australians are a bit more laid back. Your celebrant or priest should be able to help to make sure the union is legal. Our celebrant was great! She handled all the necessary paperwork. You could always hire a wedding planner! Good luck and Congratulations!

I haven't, but I think once you secure a venue the best thing would to hire a wedding planner that lives in Ireland so they can do most of the heavy work, so to speak, since you can't be there.

Are you or your fiance Irish or at the very least Catholic? Have you looked into This? It's actually very difficult to get legally married in Ireland.

Did you find your own celebrant while you were over there. The main thing im running into is that we have to meet with a registrar at least 3 months before the wedding to do all the paperwork. My fiance and i are going over again this summer to view venues and select one and a date, but he doesnt want to travel back over again before the wedding. so im wondering if i can do this remotely in the USA.

Most people get legally married in the US, then have a spiritual ceremony when they have any destination wedding outside the US

I am doing a DW in Hawaii. We are in CT so planning with time difference is difficult. I hired a planner to help with the majority. She was affordable and thus far has been so helpful. Especially for license appt, permits etc. we got engaged in sept and getting married this coming September so I think it was necessary. Not a lot of experience with outside US though. One plus is you’re going ahead of time to check things out. Definitely research and ask a lot of questions.

We actually didn’t make any planning trips to Australia, I did a lot of research online. When I finally found a venue that I loved, I had my mother in law check it out. My venue did recommend vendors but I made all the final decisions on my own and didn’t necessarily use hers.

I just did did a quick google search on getting married in Ireland, you don’t necessarily have to go 3 months beforehand to sign papers with the registrar. They can grant permission to do the necessary paperwork over the post. If I were you, I would first find a registrar to see if this was possible. If not, I would skip the trip to Ireland to look at venues and do remotely (perhaps with a wedding planner) and use the trip to Ireland for meetings with the registrar.

Good luck!! It was very important for us to legally get married in Australia instead of getting legally married in the US with a ceremony in Australia.
