Has anyone ever heard of shortening/altering your wedding dress so you can wear it again?

bikerbride, on July 31, 2009 at 4:35 AM Posted in Planning 1 11

Hi Ladies -- I was just curious - has anyone ever heard of cutting / shortening their wedding dress and/or somehow altering it after the wedding in order to make it 're-wearable'? I suppose it depends on the type of gown - but, was thinking that maybe someone's heard of a service that does this for brides who wish to do more with their dress than just wear it once & then have to put it away in a box in the closet? :-) Would welcome your advice & input on this - good idea? Bad idea? Ever known anyone who's done this? Thanks!

I have heard of it plenty. Don't know anyone who has done it though, because their dresses were very elaborate. But if your dress is simple you can change it up. Some even dye it, so it doesn't look wedding-y at all. I am probably gonna do that myself, as my dress in a different colour and shorter will not look like it was wedding dress. I don't know what your dress looks like, but you could always take it to a tailor or seamstress and see if they can also just use the upper or lower part of it.

I asked that question when I was trying on dresses at one of the boutiques. The woman told me that she had never gotten that question, but she thought it could be done, depending on the structure of the dress. I might take mine to a seamstress after the wedding and look into it. I also don't see the point of storing a dress in the closet. And I'm not going to count on my (future) daughter wanting to wear it either. I inherited a grandmother's wedding dress... while I think it looked just fine on her, there's no way I want to wear it!

Other people have suggested selling the dress to other brides, or having someone make it into a quilt.

Yeah, My dress is made that way...so that the length can be cut off and made shorter so I can wear it again. Not sure if I will or not yet. It's such a beautiful dress, I want to keep it and wear it again, so probably will have it done

A really good seamstress would be able to do whatever you like... for a price!! Go for it if you want! It makes sense!

I have heard of people wanting to do it, but I've never heard of it done. Typically the dress is just too formal and too white. A baptism gown or christening blanket is a great idea. I also know a lot of brides who have done "trash the dress" sessions with their photographers. Ask yours about it! Whatever you do, don't destroy it completely. I wanted to wear my mother's dress, but couldn't fit into it, so we used some of the lace and french buttons in other places in my wedding Smiley smile

Thank you ladies all so much! There are some really great ideas here - I really like your point, Heather G. - that even if my daughter or granddaughter one day doesn't want to wear my dress, perhaps using some pieces from it would be fun? I know that I have been asking my mom to scour her closet and find everything she can from her wedding -so far, she found her blue garter belt - was so excited about that! So, to have pieces from your mother's gown sounds absolutely wonderful :-)

Hi ladies! (My husband created our website on this, so I'm using his username). Has anyone followed through on remaking their dress after the wedding? Any suggestions?

I plan on getting it cut shorter to wear on our anniversary and just for a pretty white dress to wear out. My dress style was fit and flare where a cut right above the knees will be perfect and is crepe material with minimal detailing below that line. We plan on saving the train to make into our children's christening dresses when we have them down the road.
