Has anyone else had their rings soldered together?

Kate, on January 8, 2014 at 9:34 AM Posted in Married Life 0 20

I just got mine back from the jeweler after having my rings soldered together.. they look beautiful, but they aren't aligned perfectly. So this makes the ring a little smaller than it was... ugh.

I don't know if i'm explaining this well, but basically it's juuuuust off enough on the alignment that the opening of the hole is smaller overall. It still fits, but it is SNUG and it does not come off as smoothly as it did before.

I'm annoyed. The rings are under warranty, so if I bring them back will they be able to fix this? I know they can resize rings, but what if I have three that are soldered together? Can they re-do/resize this??

Can you see on the bottom in this picture, the middle ring (my e-ring) is slightly more "in" than the other two?

When you solder rings they will never be aligned exactly perfect and the backs will never sit perfectly flat together.

A lot of places actually suggest not having your rings solder together for this reason and the fact that if something ever happens to one ring, all of them will neep to be fixed or be taken apart.

Also, to have it resized they will need to take the rings apart again to resize them

Hmm.. I don't know if they can reverse the soldering process. I would just give them a call today and see what they can do.

I knew it wouldn't align perfectly - i figured taht would be virtually impossible. but is it standard that it would affect the sizing of the ring?

Typically yes it will effect the sizing of the actual ring. I am a 5. I can wear multiple rings that are individual at the same time. However, in a thick ring (which is what your ring became) I need to wear a 5.5.

They will need to pull your rings apart, repolish them to make them flat again and then size them.

The jewelry store I work for actually won't solder rings at all because of these issues and negative possibilities that come with soldering rings together.

Well .... dangit. i wish i knew that ahead of time.

it still makes sense for me to to have soldered them together. it's an enhancer and was really annoying when one would slip apart and they got stuck once or twice. i guess i will call and ask but i'll be prepared for them to tell me to just deal with it.

thanks for the insight Heather. i should have done more homework

Glad I haven't had mine solder together. DH kinda wants me to especially now that we are married, but I like having the 2 separate pieces.

I probably wouldn't have with two separate rings @Tiffany, but i would neeeeeever wear my band without the e-ring. there would have been a big hole in the middle. so it was always either all or nothing with these, and then i bough a fake "band" from Claire's to wear alone if i wanted (like, while my rings were at the shop)

Girls who want your rings soldered, please remember if anything happens to your center ring that need to be repaired, the side rings will have to be pulled off in order to do so and it can damage them.

Please also remember rings/diamonds are not indestructible so it you shatter a stone in one ring for instance, it could also negatively effect the other rings.

Please really research it before you decide to do it. It isn't always a great option.

Last time I was married I had my rings soldered together and don't plan on doing it this time. There were several times I wish I hadn't done that.

    @Heather I have a really dumb question

in my head, there is a way to like ... file down the inside so that it's closer to the "perfect" circle that it was and get it back to the right size. i assume that i'm totally inventing this in my brain and that this isn't actually a thing?

    Kate,

I personally would advise against having that done. The shank of the ring is a certain thickness for a reason.

I have clients who have had their rings for 30 years and after wearing it for so long the shank splits in half. It's normal wear that after so long and having it cleaned yearly like you should, the metal will slowly wear away on the bottom in some areas. If you are already starting with a thinner shank because you have the inside filed down it may react negatively as the ring ages.

A quality jeweler will make sure it is perfect.

I won't be doing this as I probably won't wear my engagement ring all the time after we are married as I'm not a huge jewelry person so one ring is enough. I also know a girl who moved to the UK (from NZ) and worked with me and her rings were soldered and she lost the diamond in one so couldn't wear hers. She then couldn't get it fixed as she has a warranty on it back in NZ and if she got it fixed elsewhere it would cause problems with the warranty. She ended up buying and wearing another cheaper ring for months. I think I'd rather just keep them separate so if something happens you have the other one to wear.

    Hi there,

I got my three rings soldered together and had the same problem you did: the fit was off and they did not align them correctly so one pinched, to the point of making that finger numb actually! I took it back and I can assure you they can resolder it (many times over) and they did so and realigned them. They also mentioned that the wider the ring, the larger the size needs to be, so be sure when you are figuring out the total size you get sized using a WIDER band than the individual components (I swear I think I got sized with a man's ring guide mine ended up being so wide all together.) Fits like a charm now.

I chose to solder them together for fear of losing them and because the feel of having not just one but three rings rotating on a finger drove me insane.

Hi I have a question I have a ring it’s been soldered together but when I bought it the 14kt stamp is not on the ring is that normal that when it’s been resized and put together that the ring will loose the stamping?
