Hi all, I am currently on my mom's insurance but I turn 26 in December. Hi all,

I am currently on my mom's insurance but I turn 26 in December. I have two part time jobs because it is hard to get a full time job in my field without an MA, which I am currently in school for. I was hoping to get on my fiance's insurance this year because our wedding isn't until November of next year. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with that happening and if you had to legally file or whatever as domestic partners? Advice?

We looked into it... DH's company would allow it, but it would be taxed like income, because we were not married.

You might just want to get on the marketplace for the 11 months or so - just be sure to cancel *before* the pay period, or they will charge you a prorated rate! (I found that out the hard way today.)

I’m not sure if this is true in all workplaces/states, but from most people I’ve talked to they’ve been able to and so have I! (We live in NY). It was super easy to add him through my work when he turned 26. I called and gave them his info, then my work send me a “domestic partnership affidavit” to fill out. You just need a copy of your lease, or utility bills showing that you’ve lived together for at least 6 months and you’re good! A warning though because I didn’t know this at first, but he will likely be taxed more on the portion of your healthcare that is covered through his work. This is only until you’re legally married.

It depends on the company's policy. My company you have to be married or in a legally recognize relationship. I have a friends company that that is not the case. They require that you have like three of ten options for example: living together with a lease signed together, in each other's will, beneficiary of life insurance, etc.
