Hanging and Displaying My Wedding Dress

Kari, on March 12, 2020 at 4:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 4

My wedding dress came on a wire hanger with a contoured cardboard insert that is shaped to look a bit like breasts to help the top of the dress hold its shape. The top is illusion lace with cups sewn in and has those fabric armpit "hanging straps" that are pinned to the cardboard so that the weight of the dress is not hanging on the actual shoulder straps at all.

Obviously I'd like to have my dress photographed the day of the wedding (you all know those back lit shots of a white wedding dress hanging in the window), but I am not sure if I should remove the hanger straps (because I want a way to hang/store it after the wedding) and I'm also concerned that hanging it from the shoulder straps would damage it.

My dress is Mikaella 2100.

These photos show a wire hanger and contoured cardboard insert similar to the one my dress is hung on. My dress is hung via the armpit "hanger straps" safety pinned to the cardboard so that there is no weight or tension on the shoulder straps at all.

Does anyone have experience with handling a dress like this, or any ideas of a similar style hanger that might serve the same purpose but be more photogenic? With this dress style, should I not cut out the armpit hanger straps and just hope they stay tucked in throughout the wedding?

I thought about how I was going to hang my dress too because my dress is an off the shoulder and I didn’t know if the armpit straps would be ugly if photographed. I was thinking of buying a mannequin torso on amazon to just have my dress on so it wouldn’t lose its shape or hang from the hanger. But I think if it’s only for a short amount of time for photos, the straps shouldn’t be damaged.

My MOH works at a retail store and was going to bring me a dress form that I thought about using if it's pretty enough and the right size. It wouldn't work for a backlit photo of the dress illuminated but could still be pretty.

I'm just debating whether I want to buy a nice hanger or not, knowing I'll need to order it in advance. I likely won't see my MOH until the wedding because of all the new travel restrictions.

My dress also came on a cardboard form like that, and for pictures we hung it on a regular hanger. It was only on it for a few minutes. As long as the hanger is smooth and doesn't snag the dress, only a few minutes on it shouldn't misshape anything.

Alternatively you could photograph it while holding it, or with it laying on a bed/couch -
