Handfasting

Heather , on May 12, 2019 at 12:52 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6
Has anyone included a hand fasting in their ceremony? I always wanted to that incorporated into mine as I am pagan and it is common in pagan wedding ceremonies. It is also, from what I understand, a Scottish tradition and FH and I are both of Scottish descent. His mom has her clan tartan on the fridge so she would probably love this. My question is if anyone has ever done it, how did you incorporate it into your "traditional" ceremony so it flowed? I've been researching it and I can't seem to find consistent information, and we are having a family friend marry us so I'd be responsible for showing them how it's done.

Thanks! Smiley smile

I’ve been to Scottish weddings where they did it. They did it maybe after the officiants speech/sermon

I had a hand fasting ceremony. There’s not a lot of “new” research in it and almost was confusing. So I kind of did my own thing. We got a beautiful handfasting rope off Etsy, I found a beautiful hand fasting prayer and our friend, the officiant, wrapped it around us as he said the prayer. We then exchanged our vows and he pulled the cord into a knot and we released our hands. Right after, we exchanged our rings and said I do

Hey Heather! Welcome to the WeddingWire community!

You handfasting ceremony can occur at any point during your ceremony but would usually be done at the same time as your vows.

Are you incorporating your Scottish heritage elsewhere in your wedding?

Thank you! I found a little bit of info on it, but like you said, it can be a little confusing. I have ropes saved on etsy as well! Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

Thank you for helping me out!

We may have some guests show up in kilts, as FH's family is literally one generation in the US! We sort of doing our own thing: hand fasting with be a nod to paganism and Scottish heritage, we make break some plates because FH is also half Greek, so just taking some traditions that have value in our lives.
