Handfasting Cords/Ribbons?

Mrsbdg, on August 3, 2017 at 1:56 AM Posted in Planning 1 15

We are doing a handfasting during our ceremony. During our final call with our officiant, she reminded us about this. I was planning to DIY it for unique-ness but now I'm looking at Etsy and seeing some pre-made ones. For those of ya'll who did handfasting, did you DIY or did you buy?

We actually bought a very thick gold chord. We just bought it from a craft store.

I went to a wedding where they did handfasting. At the bridal shower, they had cords and all the girls took turns braiding it. I don't know if that's something they made up, or a real tradition, but I thought it had a nice symbolism. Something about all your loved ones helped make you as a person and as a couple and they are helping to make the cord that binds you.

I'm ordering mine from Etsy. We found the shop we want to order from, but we haven't ordered it yet.

I'm also doing a handfasting. I had not thought about this at all but I think I will DIY. I have no clue how yet but not that it's been brought up I want to do it myself to make it more personal. I believe in the power of positive thinking and directing your energy. I want to be able to put that positive energy and love into the cord that will bind us.

In Pagan ceremonies, the couple has to braid the cord at the betrothal ceremony which happens a year and a dat before the handfasting. After a year and a day if they have decided not to be handfasted, the cord and union are severed.

You can get cord at any fabric store. Each cord should be a yard.

I had planned on just ordering our cords from online but now after reading Melissa D's comment, I think I'll find ribbons in the colours we'd decided on (representing aspects to strengthen our union) and having everyone braid them with us prior to the ceremony. It's a really sweet idea

I bought a braided cord in our wedding colors off of Amazon. I had originally planned to DIY the cords but by the time I finished the centerpieces I was over it lol. They were 3 ribbons braided together and each end had the celtic heart knot.

Celia has a list of the meaning of the different colors (it may be on her Pinterest page).

We're doing it! Each of the mom's is giving us a cord/piece of fabric, so it's out of my hands.

We bought ours on Etsy from Divinity Braid. We got gorgeous personal charms and I was super thrilled with it.

I DIY'd it. I bought ribbon from Michaels when it was on super sale a few weeks ago. I found a tutorial on youtube that was pretty easy to follow and I like the look.

I am possibly making mine since I want it to look like the one in this picture. We are getting married on St Patrick's Day so I liked the green color.
