Hand-me-down engagement ring from my mom :)

Babz-n-Bre, on February 1, 2015 at 7:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

My mom surprised me with this beautiful ring set of hers... It's "on loan until we upgrade", she says. I feel like this is a huge thing. My step dad was bothered by me announcing it as a hand-me-down, but I feel that it's a huge honor to receive a hand-me-down ring. I feel like it's a token of my mom giving her approval and blessing for my wedding. What do you guys think?

    Rings aren't hand-me-downs - they're heirlooms.

That's sweet and I love the ring! And yes, heirloom sounds much better, but either way it's a wonderful gesture Smiley smile

Super awesome! I also have a somewhat heirloom ring. fh got an ugly (but full of sentimental value) gold man ring passed down to him for graduation. when we were talking marriage, but weren't engaged yet, he told me he had a diamond for me. When he finally busted out this man ring I was like ...okay. pretty? buttttt if you looked past it's crazy exterior, there was an awesome diamond like half hidden inside. so we went to a shane co and got the diamond set in a white gold band and it's amazing.

My diamond is from my grandmother and she got it from someone else in the family. We designed the ring around the antique look my grandmother had - as hers was getting too frail for us to use. I couldn't be more happy or proud to wear something with such a rich history.

Sentimental rings like that are awesome! DH has mentioned us doing something like that down the line for our children with my e-ring.

Well, I loved the fact that the ring FW proposed with was purchased specifically for me, but she was unhappy with it being fake (stainless steel and CZ). This ring from my mom is real gold, but also CZ (which FW doesn't have to know because I'm anti-diamond anyway lol). But I suppose referring to it as "an heirloom" might be less offensive. I just had never heard HMD being a "bad thing".

I can tell you that I have both of my Grandma's Erings, and my mothers wedding set. I love them all. Today I found the necklace she wore on her wedding day to Dad while cleaning out his house. I thought I had lost it and was heartbroken. The necklace and all 3 rings will be on me in March. I love family heirlooms.

Yes it's a honor. I think heirloom rings and dresses could be better than having something new. It's the history behind it that makes it special. Congrats I'm happy for you and your FW

What a gorgeous ring! My engagement ring and wedding band (which is a ring guard) were passed down in my family for many many years. Each new bride made changes that she wanted to the settings. Some added diamonds and changed settings. This was also a huge deal because my mother refused to give me the set when I married my first husband. She gave the set to my FH and I had no idea. At that time we were looking at rings together and I had accepted the fact that I was never getting the wedding set. She had one of my brothers meet him (we all live in different states/continents) and when he said he really liked him, I guess it was a done deal lol. I'll be keeping the wedding set as it is, but we're looking into getting an every day wedding band because the ring guard goes from one knuckle to the next and takes up half of my finger. It's not an easy daily use ring lol. Take care of this heirloom your mother gave you. It's definitely a precious gift not many get to experience.

I thinks it's very pretty. Hand me down or Heirloom, If anyone other than you cares- screw them! My FH was injured & out of work & his GMA gave him 2 rings to chose from to ask me to marry him. I knew it was coming (the question) but I didn't think then b/c of our circumstances. We offered to give the second ring back to her (but she insisted we keep it & so we are going to have the diamonds (it has about 20 tiny diamonds) reset to line my current e-ring). To me it was very special b/c my only request for my e-ring had been to have something special to me, & not like the average ring I kept seeing. & he nailed both.

Im using a cocktail ring my great Aunt made from her wedding rings, that she left me when she passed away. My great auntie passed away one day short of her 100th birthday and was married was she was 13 years old, born in 1904. Yup, they were married in 1917. My uncle passed away in the late 80s and she never remarried or took off that ring, or moved it to her right hand ( much to the shegrin of my gramma lol) Its beautiful and Im proud to get to wear it as my wedding ring. People do ask me all the time though, wheres your engagement ring? But then i get to tell them this awesome story. Great karma in that there ring. Ps i love your heirloom ring!

Awesome, my E-ring is an heirloom from my FH's mom, who got it from her mom. I don't know the full story but I think it goes back a few generations. It's a nice ring, just that it's yellow gold.
