Hand fans for BM's to carry instead of bouquets?

Natania, on June 18, 2017 at 9:03 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 18

Hello all. I want to do something a bit cheaper than a bouquet. I was initially thinking a kissing ball would be fun but I think it would be just as expensive to make. So, I really like the hand fan with a small flower attached at the front. I think I'm in need of some affirmation that it won't look tacky in pictures. Thoughts?

Can't say I'm a fan to be honest (excuse the pun,) anything not a bouquet just looks odd and out of place I find. Maybe look into cheaper flowers, eg baby's breath.

I have a hard time divorcing pre-wedding planning thinking from post-wedding planning thinking. I don't know how I would feel about this before I started wedding planning, now whenever I see it I just assume the bride didn't want to spend money on flowers, not that it's unique or fun. I really don't know what a regular guest would think of them.

I think it's cute, but I also want to say I made kissing balls from softballs and flowers (mine are fake, but you could do real) for about $6 per piece.

Please excuse the weird loopy thing at the bottom of the dangle, I was deciding how long I wanted it to hang with the bauble on the bottom.

No offense intended, but if BMs are carrying something besides bouquets, even small bouquets, plenty of your guests will figure out that you didn't want to spend money on flowers for anyone besides yourself. The ladies paid for their gowns -- at least give them a single stem with a ribbon, but please, leave the plastic/paper fans in the party store. It's an idea that has been around for years -- and it hasn't caught on for a reason.

I'm doing a single rose. I don't don't want to spend a ton on bouquets, but I want them to carry something.

Well, I don't necessarily just want to do the idea because it's cheaper- I am getting married in an old victorian house and I thought it would also go well with the style.

UO but I don't see why it matters if people think you did it to save money. As a guest, if I were provided amazing food and plenty of drinks I would be glad the couple spent money there instead of on elaborate bouquets.

OP if you care about what others might think, do the single rose. Otherwise, do what you like!

Don't like it! If you are trying to cut corners, this is not the way I'd suggest. You don't have a lot of time to figure it out. Best of luck to you!

The fans are cute, but I don't think they achieve the same wedding look to them as bouquets. I think doing a small simple flower bouquet is preferable. You can choose budget friendly flowers that are still pretty!

I carried a fan in 1994 when my dad married my step-mom. If it fits your theme and you think it's beautiful then go for it. Personally, 10 year old me will always associate this with the early '90s and my brother refusing to stand in the receiving line properly.

My mom had fan bouquets in the 80s, so I personally wouldn't do them just because my mom did and I like to be different. This might be too bold for some people, but I love it. I have these giant paper flowers for my bridesmaids. The look really good in photos. I got mine from Etsy a lady from Europe made them! Theirs were about $15 a flower and mine is 3 inches bigger and a darker purple so mine was $20

Also I have a kissing ball for one of my centerpieces for $9 from TJ maxx and it has a diamond in each of the flowers center. The only problem was they only had white, so you couldn't pick out a specific color. Another idea I've never heard of until my aunt told me, but she had her bridesmaids carry lanterns down the aisle. Thats unique and different. Kind of old timey to me too.

Hi! Did you end up using fans for your wedding? I know it’s been some time but I’m ignoring all of the comments here regarding fans looking “cheap” and worrying what other guests think. I don’t care what guests think, and the reason why I’m doing fans is because flowers ARE expensive. They’re super cute if done well. Do you have any pictures from your wedding if you used fans?

    Thanks!
