Hand canceling postcard?!

Michelle, on January 18, 2017 at 9:18 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I got my save the dates all addressed!! I had heard that I could hand cancel the stamps so that they wouldn't get that big black bar printed up top. But when I took them in they had no clue what I was talking about and told me everything was automated now. I went in when is wasn't busy but the guy didn't want to help me. What do I do?

Honestly, Hand Cancelling is kind of a waste. At some point, they will be put through a machine anyway. I wouldn't worry too much!

Yeah, I didn't do that with mine. I put stamps on them and dumped them in the correct mail bins- in or out of town. Simple!

They will still go through a machine even if you hand cancel them. It's not worth it.

Hand cancelling does not take that black mark away. That's a stamp across your postage so it can't be reused. Hand cancelling just means that's done by hand instead of a machine, and is generally only for bulky invitations that might get ruined by the machine. For a regular envelope or a simple post card, it is not necessary.

But yes, it still exists. They might not like to do it at that post office.

It's a waste. I've received hand-cancelled mail and it still comes through pretty marked up and sometimes ragged.

Honestly it seems like a waste. I think it's something that no one really cares about or notices and there's still a chance, like others have said, that it will probably run through a machine anyway or look messed up when it gets to the person's house. I'd skip it.

Tell him to give you the stamp and do it yourself in the post office. I had the lady at the post office do it for me, but you can easily do it yourself. I like the look of hand canceling, it's cleaner to me.

I got some RSVPs back recently and the stamp wasn't cancelled at all. I think it was some kind of error. Either way, mail is going to go through a machine to be sorted.

It does still exist. Some post offices may say they don't do that. If so, try a different post office. Others may say they do it for a fee. If they attempt to charge you, tell them you don't mind doing it yourself and they will likely hand you the stamp. It's not hard.

Actually, when I went in to do it for our STDs, the guy was ready to do it for me free of charge (they really aren't supposed to charge for it anyway), but another postal worker made a big stink about it and told him he had to charge me, so I just did it myself. He kept muttering to all the other postal workers and customers how wrong that was. I reassured him I truly did not mind doing it. He felt so bad about it, though. He was the same guy who helped me when I had to go in to send a new STD to replace one that had gotten lost. He hand cancelled it for me and told me it was free.
