Hand-addressing Stds and Invites - Any Tips?

Savannah, on August 10, 2020 at 6:22 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

Hey all!

I'll be hand-addressing all my envelopes. Any suggestions to make them look nice? Don't need professional, just good-enough (haha).

We have white envelopes and navy & white invites.

Thanks in advance!

I just took my time and wrote slowly. As long as it's legible, it's fine. The envelope always goes straight to the trash.

I actually got an old school calligraphy set to do mine! It was super user-friendly and easy to master. After only a couple trial runs on spare envelopes, I had it down. I highly suggest it- it looks fancy and professional, and was under $30 on Amazon!

Go really old school and hand write them lightly in Pencil the go over it in Pen or calligraphy marker. When it’s good and dry, lightly erase any leftover pencil.

If you can get extra envelopes, do so for sure. We made so many mistakes and went through a ton of envelopes. Another thing to be aware of is the ink smudging. Our envelopes were shimmering and sleek and the ink kept smudging on them. We had to use workable fixative spray to protect the ink.

I addressed daughter's invitations. Before I started I Googled "wedding envelope stencils" -- you'll find a bunch of options: some plastic ones that you can buy at a craft store or some you can easily download and print. The download ones often suggest cutting out spaces and placing the stencil on top of the envelope and then writing the address within the cut-outs. That seemed like a lot of work to me, so I just printed it out and cut the template so it was just smaller than the invitation envelopes. Then I slipped it inside a white envelope -- I could see the lines through the envelope which helped me keep the spacing neat as I wrote the address. They looked really good and I don't have any special handwriting skills.

For our save the dates I made a template with spacing guidelines and put in inside of the envelope before I wrote the addresses so I would write in straight lines. I also bought a return address stamp so I wouldn't have to write those out.

    Get. A. Good. Pen.
Haha but seriously a good pen can make a difference. I tested out 4, but I'm a total pen nerd.
Tasting out the pen ahead of time is a good idea though, so you can make sure you don't use one that is prone to smudging.

Don’t stress over it because people immediately grow the envelopes away. But, I used a ruler to make a straight line guide as I hand wrote them. Didn’t want my lines to drift up or down.

I planned on hand addressing my own also. And since I know my handwriting is not the prettiest I was going to type the information up and print them out on the stickers that some people us. Hoping that that will come out looking good.

Take your time. Use a good quality pen. Have extra envelopes in case of mistakes. Get help from fiance, moms, bridesmaids who have nice handwriting and can lighten the workload by making a group project of it.
