Hair/makeup Trial Help

Nicole, on November 6, 2019 at 4:23 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 6
Hello there,

I received a few recommendations for hair/makeup that seem to be in the same price range. The next step would have to be doing a trial and determining who to use based off of that trial. I have a huge issue with disappointing people and feeling guilty, so can anybody offer advice as to how to politely tell someone that you are not interested without disappointing anybody? Do you recommend setting up a certain expectation immediately that you are looking at a few stylists or...?

Usually a trial is done a couple weeks/months before the wedding so the stylist knows what you want the day of and can practice it on you. I can't imagine paying for multiple trials before booking someone, but if you can afford to then that sounds fine. Some may not do a trial without booking first, so I would look into that. Otherwise just show them a photo of what you want, I'm not sure what other expectation you could ask of them. As for not disappointing anyone, I would just say "thank you for meeting with me, but I've decided to go with another stylist."

I agree with PP, the trial was about a month before my wedding with the HMUA I booked 8 months out, to make sure she knew what I wanted and so I could make any changes if I wasn't happy. That is how the company I went with does trials. Definitely check if you are wanting to do it differently.

I couldn't afford to pay for more than one trial, so I set mine up basically to make sure the gals I hired could do the makeup and hair how I wanted them. They were great!!

HMUA generally book up 6 months to a year in advance depending. Make sure you start your trials early. That way you can find the HMUA you like. Have your Inspiration photo ready. If you have specifics, then let them know. Like for me personally, I wanted a bold lip color. Etc. And I didn't like the lashes I wore from my trial. They looked great but by the end of the day the lashes drove me crazy. So I let them know. And on my wedding day, the MUA accommodated the changes I requested. Utlimately they want you to be happy with their work. Just be honest about it all.

If you're wanting to do multiple trials, I'd nonchalantly go in and just say you want your makeup done. Make something up. If you like it, ask them about wedding/bridal makeup. If you don't, they never knew you were considering them in the first place.

    Thanks for advice everybody.

Its kind of hard to not do a trial because I haven’t seen the person’s work except one or two photos in each case (I got two referrals from friends) and I want to make sure that they are gonna work with my vision before I book them.
