Hair/makeup Artist Minimum Problem

Hailey, on June 19, 2023 at 1:02 AM Posted in Pennsylvania Planning 0 10

I've got an unexpected problem with finding a hair and makeup artist. The wedding is in Philadelphia in October (I live out of state) and I've been sending out requests for quotes from multiple stylists. But they all have a minimum person quota and won't come out for small groups.

I've only got 2 bridesmaids. One wants to do her own hair/makeup (she's good at it), and one wants to do her own hair (it's a pixie cut) and will only want makeup. My mom doesn't like having makeup put on her, and she doesn't have any hair from the chemo/radiation she's been doing. MIL has no interest in hair or makeup at all, she's a super minimalist. I respect everyone's decisions and would never force them to get hair or makeup done, I like 'em just the way they are anyways. But that's the whole immediate family/bridal party group.

So I'm trying to find someone who will come and do bridal hair and makeup, plus makeup for one bridesmaid. I'm willing to pay well, not trying to be cheap! But I keep running into the same wall- pay for the price of bride and 3+ bridesmaids or they won't come. I think paying about $1000+ for my hair/makeup and one makeup session for a bridesmaid to be pretty steep though... How do I go about doing this?

I'll mention I'm not great at all doing my own hair and makeup so a DIY option is not what I want. I'm a stresser, and I don't want the stress of doing my hair/makeup where I could screw it up (I always do) and then forever remember that with my gorgeous pictures from my A+ photographer.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the best option would be to go to a local salon rather than having someone travel to you.

On-site hair and make up artists normally always have a minimum amount of services that are required in order to make it worth their while to travel. I ran into this as well with my destination wedding. You can definitely keep looking to see if you can find someone that will travel for you without a minimum (maybe ask your Photographer if they have any suggestions – people in the wedding industry tend to know each other). If not, though, you are either going to have to:

    A. pay for extra services that no one is getting in order to have them travel to you

    B. go to a local salon for hmu

    C. Do your own (you can go to a make up artist local to you and have them give you instructions on how to do your make up, or watch YouTube videos and practice like crazy up until the wedding), or have someone in attendance do it for you (maybe the bridesmaid that is really good at doing makeup?)

I’m not sure how far into the planning process you are, but another option would be to have your wedding on a weekday. I found a lot of hmua that would travel without a minimum M-TH

Agree with the others. I'm going to a nearby salon that does bridal hair and makeup. I think it's a good option because you don't have to worry as much about them running late and it saves money to go to them.

Wish that were the case! We're getting married on a Tuesday but that doesn't seem to matter, it's the same answer. Thanks for the suggestions though, may cave and end up taking makeup classes or something. Learning to do it myself would be worth the cost I suppose.

That’s very common with the “all inclusive” hair/makeup team businesses where they require that you get all services exclusively from them. Independent beauticians have fewer requirements. They are the ones who you find on local Instagram accounts by doing a search for “yourcity wedding hair”. Some companies on Yelp work independently and provide services ala carte with no minimum.

You can also try thumbtack.com. This is where I found my makeup artist. They show rates, reviews, how long they have been in business etc. You may find someone for makeup and hair for your group. Good luck on everything.

I haven’t read all the comments so I apologize! But I ran into this as well. It’s just me and two other girls. I was always clear from the start- 3 women. And then we would get to the contract and they’d say “ well if you find two more let us know!”
I finally booked someone and we had our vision call last night! She is wonderful and can accommodate any party size and is coming to us to get ready!
