Hair up? Or down? Pros/cons of each?

alexisdemetra, on July 18, 2018 at 2:16 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 26

I have my trial with my hair dresser in two weeks and I am completely stumped on what I want to do with my hair. My dress is spaghetti strap a-line lace dress with the back of the dress hitting around mid-back (with some pretty scalloped lace and button detail in the back).

For me-- I always wear my hair down. I've never mastered the look of a cute pony tail or bun and so I tend to wear my hair down. I have naturally wavy hair, but am really great with a curler and do loose waves when I'm going out or for a fun event. It holds curl incredibly well (I mean for DAYS after I curl it) and I'm very lucky for that!

I'm debating between having it down and curled with one side pinned back and away from my face, or having it in a very very loose full low up-do. I definitely don't want an updo on the top of my head or super tight. Loose, piecey, relaxed for sure.

There will be a lot of dancing at my wedding (a band and Greek music/dancing!), but it's in November so hopefully there will be a nice chill in the air and I can duck out on the patio if I get hot. I feel more comfortable with my hair down, but am worried about hugging so many people and getting matted down, getting hot, getting that tangly mess under the hair near the neck after a while. However, I've never had my hair in an up-do I like. But the attached picture is one I could see myself liking.

Anyone else have this struggle? Any advice? Thanks!!

If you typically do for your hair down, and your dress is a little lower of a back, I would recommend having it down so you are more comfortable!

I always wear my hair down. Even when I’ve been in other weddings, I’ve done half up half down. I pictured my same for my wedding day. However I chose a gown with amazing detail on the back and if I wore my hair down, no one would see the detail. If your dress has detail that your hair might cover up, I would highly recommend wearing it up with some pieces curled and hanging in the front near your face. I had my trial this past weekend and I was super nervous about it but my hairstylist nailed it. I felt so bridal and pretty with my hair up. (It was all up but like lower on my head, close to my neck)

she also pointed out that until after her own wedding she never realized how many pics are taken of the back of the couple and if she had to do hers over again, she’d have worn hers up.

I say wear whats comfy for you. I love hair being down. I plan on having mine down and pinning it up once the dancing starts...my hair can make me super hot. That may be an option for you.

That is AMAZING advice! I definitely think hair up looks a bit more "bridal" and formal. I'm just so unfamiliar with it. I'm hoping I can kind of play around with a low up-do like you mentioned and see how I feel in it, knowing that if I don't like it I wear my hair down and pinned back pretty frequently I know what it'll look like. AND in both of my engagement shoots, I've had my hair down and any kind of breeze has been a pain in the butt since my hair flies in my face. A lot to consider!! Thank you!

I love the down-do you posted (I actually pinned it myself!) but I always revert back to updos. Personally, my hair is HEAVY and it looks great with loose curls for a bit but with sweat and dancing it'll frizz right up and stick to my back, making it worse. So I think I'm set on an updo so they can spray it and it'll come in less contact with sweat (even though that's a gross thought haha).
If your hair holds a curl well though, a down do will work. Plus ducking outside in November would help. Plus that hair style is super pretty

I had a similar dilemma. I never wear my hair up unless I’m exercising so it would feel weird to me to have an up do. However my wedding is in August and it could protebtially be very hot. At the end of the day I decided on a partial updo. The only time the heat will be an issue is for pictures and they won’t last long. Everything else is inside and has AC. I just couldnt do the up do. I know I would think I didn’t look like myself in the pictures. I feel like my hair is similar to how you described yours. I attached some pictures from my trial.

I wore it like that all night when I cooked and cleaned around my apartment and slept on it and it was still curly in the morning.

That is absolutely gorgeous! Just looking at the pictures I think our hair has a similar texture so that is helpful to see and hear! I'm open to half up as well. I feel like I'm kind of open to all hairstyles but need to be a little bit focused when I go into my trial! I think yours is stunning!

What about a half up, half down like some of the pictures you attached?

It is a gross thought-- but a real one! Definitely a little worried about that as well. Or if one of the groomsmen swings his arm around me during "Sweet Caroline" or something and just smushes my down hair to my back and his sweat and uggghhh. I feel like potentially more things can go wrong with it down, but it's what I'm used to. Decisions, decisions!

I usually wear my hair down so I was leaning towards that as well, but then realized, I’m not trying to look like how I usually do, I’m trying to look my BEST. Do I ever normally wear a wedding dress? Nope, so why am I trying to make my hair look more “normal” for me? I’m doing a loose updo too because I feel like the tight updo is not my best look, but my perspective is... how often do I have a professional doing my hair? I can wear it down any other day, I want something special for my wedding!

That's actually a really great thought haha. I kept thinking "oh I never wear my hair up, why would I do that?!" but forgetting that I'm in practically a ball gown! Thanks for that comment. It definitely makes me consider things in a different way Smiley smile

Haha yeah I totally relate, those were my exact thoughts too. “Why would I wear my hair up for my wedding if I never wear it up” uhh... because it’s my wedding! Hahaha. I feel like a low, loose updo is a good middle ground for those of us who usually wear our hair down. A tight, high updo is definitely not my look

I hate updos! I feel like my chin/jaw is so noticeably angled without my hair down. I'm having a beach ceremony next month and I know in my heart my hair would probably fair better if I wear it up...BUT I'm stubborn and love having long, wavy hair down my back. I've yet to even do a hair trial. I have clip in extensions that I plan to wear to add a little length (and hide my bra straps). Maybe I'll settle for a half up/half down last minute. I still don't know what look I'm going for- I'm really indecisive.

I'm sure it'll be really humid and my hair won't stay curled but as long as it looks good in pics, I can handle it. I haven't considered the neck sweat or the breeze. SIGH!

I'm doing this because I love the back of my dress but wanted to keep my hair down.

Exactly! Have you had your trial yet? I’m worried the braid might make it too casual but idk yet. I may do just like a twist instead of the braid

Yes, I did. I think it turned out pretty good. It was just a trial so she didn't use a whole bunch of hold in the hair.I'm having my wedding on a farm so I kinda needed more of a relaxed look anyways. Here's a pic.
