Hair stylist rates - reasonable?

Shannon, on February 5, 2017 at 5:40 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Sooooo I know I asked about MUA rates on here before, but now that I've gotten that all booked I'm looking into hair.

I'm being told $250 for bridal hair ($100 for trial), and $100 for each bridesmaid without any sort of extra travel fees tacked on (they will be coming to me) I live in an expensive region as it is, but would this sound reasonable to you?

Flowers and HMUA have been true sticker shock for me lol

This sounds reasonable to me. Quotes I've been getting in NYC are similar (aside from 1 ridiculous quote).

I know this is the lesser of the opinions here because of using a family member, but I preface with saying she offered and is being paid and getting way more out of it in the long run.

My sister in law is going to cosmotology school for doing hair and makeup. With that being said, she is charging me $20 a piece and being able to use the pictures in her portfolio to do our hair and make up.

You may be able to find someone in your area who is also in school and let them do it for a lesser fee and using having the option to put it in their portfolio.

I think it sounds expensive but I don't know your area. From my experience it is better to get a hair and makeup rate. I am paying $200 for hair and makeup and my family are paying $100 each for hair and makeup. No travel fees. This is for Miami.

You can try to negotiate. One hair and makeup person gave me a price list that said $300 for bridal hair and makeup and $150 for photo hair and makeup. I told her that was ridiculous because they are the same thing. She dropped the price to $150 but tacked on travel fees. I am not going with her.

Flowers and HMUA have been huge sticker shocks for me too. I'm finding a very wide range in San Diego from $60 for hair up to $200+ it's crazy! And then to pay almost $200 just for a trial of both is a lot!

Ours is $175 for bridal and $100 for bridesmaids, so that sounds about right!

Technically if someone is in school for hair they are not allowed to charge anything. As a professional I would not pay $250 for an up do. It literally costs maybe $15 between product and bobby pins. Mzosy can be done in 1 hour or less. Meaning they are making 235 for an hour of work plus tip which most expect. If you take out 15 for gas that's just nuts IMO.I wouldn't pay that for just hair. Yea some areas are more expensive but that is a significant profit.

All of the salons I've talked to are $50-70 for hair and $40-60 for makeup with $100 travel fee.

I had total sticker shock when looking into hair and think its silly they charge the bride more. But my FH gave me the idea to contact my hairdresser seeing as we are getting married in the town I grew up in. She did my hair for prom and I loved it. She is charging us $60 for myself and bridesmaids for hair and travel includedSmiley smile I scored on this one!

Thanks for the input all! I truly can't get over the insane prices attached to anything "wedding" in my area.

@Lauren that's not a bad idea, maybe I'll see if my hairdresser might be willing to do the same.

Ouch. Mine said $40-60 per person. It seems like it depends on location a lot!

@Greene I was actually just on her site also, her BM fee is just a little higher than I'd like but I'm contemplating it

OK so your mileage may vary but I'm getting married in Manhattan and I'm paying $150 for trial, $200 for day of for me, and $125 per additional (mom, mother in law, 3 bridesmaids) plus $25 for travel. So all told, $1000. But that's hair for 6 women, done by two stylists, on location in Manhattan at 6 am on a Sunday.

100 each bridesmaid hair and 75 makeup . Airbrush, falsies and skin prep are extra if they want them.

I love how people are saying it's overpriced. What you don't realize is this stylist could stay in the salon and make more than that for the day. Instead they reschedule existing clients drive to your location work and drive back to wherever ... then most likely only get 50% of the money unless they own their own business. So that is why it's so expensive . It's half the price if you go to salon but most brides do not want that anymore .

Not to mention some brides timeline requires you to be actually doing hair 5-6 am .. so yes it's expensive but you get what you pay for and an experienced event stylist is worth it

@Gorgamel I do agree about the value of the stylist leaving their salon for at least half a day to tend to your party, the stylist I want the most is pricey and the owner of her salon but I also acknowledge that I'd be paying for her expertise (she's one of the top rated stylists on Long Island). I just wanted to compare and contrast some other quotes to make sure that it's still within reason as I know zip about costs like these lol

We'll be in London, so not the same market, but equivalent price wise to NYC. Paying the equivalent of $325 for hair and makeup for me, $75 for my MOH for Hair and Makeup. The price is inclusive of the fee for them to come to us. The bridal trial is another $120ish.
