Hair & Makeup Trial - Prices, Freaking Out, etc...

OnTheWayToMrsA, on June 9, 2017 at 11:22 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Hi everyone. You may remember that I posted the other day about the Mary Kay makeup trial I "won" (which I then cancelled, thank you!), but you all pointed out how late I am in doing this. I'm getting married in 69 days and I can't believe I didn't think to look into this sooner... so now I'm panicking. I never EVER wear makeup, so maybe that's why I hadn't thought about it, but now I'm racing the clock and definitely worried.

In addition to the time issue, I also didn't realize how much I'd need to budget for this. We're getting married on Long Island and, so far, it seems very expensive (though I assume you get what you pay for). Please give me some advice on what I should expect to pay for hair and makeup (the trial and the wedding day) and let me know if I'm supposed to only pay for myself or my bridal party as well. I'll do whatever is needed, I'm just not sure. Any suggestions about literally anything here would be helpful, I'm clueless.

I'm freaking out a bit Smiley sad

I was married in Colorado but my trial was $100, hair and makeup on my wedding day was $450. Bridesmaids were $140, moms were $130. I covered the cost of everyone simply because I felt bad making them pay so much for it.

I believe pricing varies depending on many factors such as the stylist, years of experience, and if you are getting airbrushed or not. Have you booked a trial yet?

I haven't booked anything yet, not even the trials. I just spoke with a woman who's on her way to a bride now, but she said if I send an email (which I did) she'll get back to me with more information on Monday. She also said she believes she has availability on my date, so fingers crossed for that!

OP - I am sure your area is much different than mine on pricing but my hair and makeup with the trial included and travel fees will run me $180. If you are not requiring your bridal party to have their hair and make up done professionally, then you do not have to pay for it. If you are requiring them to, then you do. They need to decide upon you booking your artist if they are getting theirs done professionally so you can tell the salon how many artists to bring. Don't panic.. it will work out, but I'd get on the phone now.

ETA: I just got on a bridal makeup sight for the Long Island area and it looks like this woman in particular is charging

    $80 bridal trial

    $150 bride

    $90 bridesmaids

Not sure if she travels to venues but here is site www. Lolalovesmakeup.com

Don't freak out dress designer twin!

As the owner of the company, my H/MUA charged over $440 for hair and makeup day of, but she has others on her team that are less expensive.

You do not have to pay for your bridal party's H/MU unless you require it. Otherwise, tell them they can do as they wish.

Do you use Instagram? Use the hashtag #longislandmua and #nycmua. Start reaching out to them and ask them for their rate, tell them when your wedding date is too because they may already be booked. But don't worry - there are TONS of H/MUA professionals on the island, you WILL find someone.

You only have to pay for the BP if you require them to get their hair and makeup done. If it is optional - they can cover themselves.

I'm paying 1500 for 20 services for me and my girls and moms, so that breaks down to $75 per service (hair=1, makeup=1, trial hair=1, ECT) so thats $150 for hair and makeup, and $150 for my trial. Now, this is all relative to your location, my HMUA is out of Nashville.

In NH I am paying $65 hair and $45 make up. BP is optional so if they want to they cover themselves. Same prices for them.

I am also on Long Island. My hair trial (on June 30th) is $50 and the hair on "day of" is $150. My makeup trial was $75 and the MU on "day of" is $150. My MOH is just getting her hair blown out and my stylist is charging $40. The MU artist is charging her $75. I don't have BMs. Even though I am not requiring my MOH do hair and MU, I am paying because she is throwing my shower and I want to do this for her (in addition to a gift). We've been best friends for over 40 years.

I don't know where on LI you are but if you need some names, please let me know. I am on the south shore near RVC.

If you are not requiring Hair and MU, you do not need to pay. If you are, then yes, you should pay.

Wow, thank you so much for all the information! Sorry I disappeared, I went into another room to experiment with some old makeup I had laying around (from another time I experimented)... let's just say I looked like I was beaten with a bat, lol.

I'll be going through all of this information soon, I really appreciate it. I'm not requiring my bridal party to do anything, so I suppose by that rule of thumb I won't have to include those costs, but if the prices stay on the lower end I'll try to at least cover some of it because they've been amazing.

Here's the kicker: my "older brother" (the brother of my best friend since we were infants) is a MAC makeup artist with 20 years experience who wants to do my makeup for the wedding.. but I'm on board with the "no friendor" rule, so I politely declined. He also lives in Arizona so we wouldn't have time for trials beforehand, which would've made me super nervous, but damn lol.

ETA: Thanks again everyone, I'm feeling a bit calmer now xo
