Hair loss help!

Amber, on March 24, 2017 at 10:00 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Let me start off by saying I'm blessed with the amount of hair I do have. I'm not a cancer patient and do not have some sort of disease/genetic condition where I've lost all of my hair. However, because of a heart condition I'm on medication which makes me 'shed' like crazy. I'm talking about losing 5-10 strands at least every? time I run a brush through my hair. I've been on it for about three years and my hair is about half as thick as it used to be, and I really don't want it any thinner with my wedding coming up Smiley tongue The Drs said that's a side effect they have no control over, and there's really no other meds they can recommend that would do the same thing without their own, even worse, side effects. I guess what I'm asking is can y'all recommend anything to help my hair either grow faster or not fall out so easily? Vitamins, shampoo, a special brush, anything?

Try eating lots of omega 6 through walnuts and chia seeds. Good luck!

@Mrs. LMac I did talk to my Dr about it, she said there was nothing she could prescribe/recommend besides looking into? different vitamins and such. Since I know very little about stuff like that, I turned to y'all Smiley smile

Do you have a regular hair stylist? That person may be able to offer tips or recommendations as far as specific shampoos or hair treatments.

I lost about half of my hair several years ago due to a chronic condition; the only thing that saved my sanity in that regard was chopping it all off (elbow-length to chin-length in one snick of the scissors). It didn't prevent me from losing my hair as much, but it wasn't as noticeable because the strands were so much shorter. Once my condition was under control, and I could eat normally again, my hair grew back, although it's still not as think as it used to be. Where you're on medication for a specific condition, cutting it may not be the answer.

I agree with PP about eating a healthy, balanced diet, no heat treatments, and either using a wet brush or not brushing your hair until it's dry.

Biotin is great for hair growth, taking prenatals may help I agree with taking omega 3s that is what I'm taking for my skin and hair and I have noticed improvement.

I actually just left my doctor's appointment over this same issue. It's completely, COMPLETELY different for everyone so please go to the doctor. That being said, I used to have thick hair and because of my diet, I'm not getting enough nutrients. She suggested a nutritionist. If your body isn't getting enough of what it needs to grow and maintain your health on the inside, you'll start to see it on the outside, too. Biotin is a great supplement to take, as well as some fish oil/omega-3 if you're not eating foods with those nutrients already. Probiotics can be helpful, too. Wash your hair every other day making sure to use deep conditioning treatments (they sell them at sephora and ulta for cheap), don't brush while it's wet (your hair's elasticity is at its highest when wet so only brush when dry), massage your scalp gently while shampooing, try some at-home DIY hair masks using equal parts coconut oil and castor oil. There's plenty you can do, but that's assuming there isn't an underlying health issue. See a dermatologist or your PCP.

I lost a bunch of hair this last year, given for a very different reason but still. I lost about 60 lbs in a year and as a result (which is very common I've heard with that much weight loss) I lost probably half of my hair. I had suuuuper thick and long hair as well so it wasn't that big of a deal since even now I still have a lot of hair.

I started taking biotin and prenatal vitamins. I'm not sure that helped with the hair loss since weight loss related hair loss mostly resolves itself but it did help a lot with regrow the! I have now have a halo of baby hair.... which is somewhat annoying to deal with but hey at least it's all growing back!

If you're concerned for wedding day specifically, then extensions help create volume and length, so they'll make your hair thicker and/or longer.

For the day to day, a balanced diet is essential. I take a hair/nails/skin vitamin because its more balanced than just taking biotin. I also take a collagen supplement twice daily and I've noticed a difference in my body - not just my hair but my joints too. I don't recommend brushing, maybe just a wide tooth comb.
