Hair and Makeup Trial- Safe Location?

Eliza, on May 28, 2022 at 11:46 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 8
Hello! I’m in the middle of trying to find my hair and makeup professional for my wedding. There’s a lady I found on Thumbtack that is reasonably priced but she is a traveling MUA and would need to come to my home for the hair and makeup trial. I feel really uncomfortable with that idea because of safety concerns (this is essentially a complete stranger who isn’t affiliated with a well known company or brand) and worse, what happens if I don’t end up liking my hair and makeup? I just never know what people are capable of.

She doesn’t have a salon or another place I can meet her at. Also I don’t feel comfortable asking to use one of my friends’ homes because I feel like I would be putting them in the same safety issues. Any other options or avenues I can try here? Has anyone experienced this before?
Also if she does a great job and I want to hire her for my wedding day then she could just do my hair and makeup at the venue so that shouldn’t be an issue. I’m just trying to figure out a safe location for the hair and makeup trial.

Would you be able to use your venue as a location for a trial, on a day that they don't have a wedding booked? That way, you can also find out if your venue has enough power outlets for curling irons/etc, and your hair/makeup artist could become familiar with the venue ahead of time, and you wouldn't have to worry about safety concerns.

While I understand your reservations, it's completely normal for independent vendors like this to come to your home for the trial. We inquired with around 12 makeup artists and every single one of them travelled to clients' homes for the trial. Does this person have good reviews on Thumbtack? If they don't have any reviews, then that's a red flag. Doing the trial at your home for independent artists like this is common practice. Maybe you could have friends or family members home with you so that you won't be alone.

They have literally only 2 reviews so I’m unsure how legitimate they are unfortunately 😕

My MUA does trials out of her home..She is also a traveling artist. It’s normal for traveling MUA to come to your house for a trial. If you are questioning it then maybe find someone else. Before I went with the person I picked I googled, Facebook searched, looked up her on WeddingWire and also thumbtack before booking! I’m totally happy with my choice and my trial is June 12th and I feel completely comfortable going to her house.

Yeah 2 reviews is pretty miniscule. I can understand your hesitation. Are they at least good reviews? I'd probably try to find someone with at least 10 reviews

Always follow your gut. If you are concerned, then keep looking for a beautician you are comfortable with coming to your home. Have a consultation via phone or Zoom or meet in a neutral location such as Starbucks for a consultation before the actual trial.
Also, I personally would be wary of someone who says they do both hair and makeup because not everyone is talented at both. Also if you are having them do bridesmaids and others as well, she can’t clone herself to do everyone in a short period of time because she needs an assistant at least.

For me, the travel/location isn't the issue. 2 reviews is too few for me to feel comfortable. They may be newer
