Hair and Makeup for Cousins and Aunts

EngineerInLove, on March 8, 2018 at 3:36 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 9
My cousins and aunts are flying in from Ireland and Australia for my wedding, and I'm thrilled that they are making the trip. My mom mentioned to me that they will want their hair and makeup done the morning of the wedding, and I already told her that the salon I'm going to is already booked up for the time slot I'm going for. It's true, they aren't a huge salon, but also as much as I love them, I don't want 5 more opinions on my wedding morning, I want to get ready in relative peace with my mom, FMIL, and BMs.

I'm thinking that I should offer to make appointments for them at another salon near the hotel, since they've done the same for me when I've travelled for their weddings and then paid for myself. If you were in their shoes, would you appreciate this? Or am I way overthinking it? Yes they are grown women that can book their own hair and makeup but I don't want to be rude seeing as they're traveling REALLY REALLY far for us and always bend over backwards for me when I visit them.

Is that customary in those countries to do that? Can your mom maybe take that off your plate for you? It's an easy enough task and she seems to have semi-volunteered you. You could always suggest a few places.

On second thought, I wouldn't want to put a deposit down, but if it's just a matter of making appointments, you could probably manage that. It might be logistically tough for them to call and schedule their own because of time zone changes. Also are international calls still super expensive or do phone plans cover that now?

It's not so much customary as they all like to look good and go all out for weddings. Like, my cousin invested in her own gel manicure set and does it for everyone regularly. Fascinators and Derby hats are pretty common at weddings too, and I'm sure they will wear them for our outdoor ceremony.

My mom isn't from the area and has a terrible sense of direction, so yes she COULD book for them instead since she's already tasked with booking their hotels, because of the time difference like you suggested. Maybe that's an option, I'll just give her the names of places nearby and a latest appointment time so they can make it for the buses. I don't know if international calls are still expensive but we all use Viber to text, my mom calls them regularly so it can't be too bad!

I definitely wouldn't want to put down a deposit for them or pay for it, so if it's just giving a name and an appointment I can do that fine. Thanks for talking it through with me!

That's totally fine! That's what my mom did for my aunts and stepmom, because the hair and makeup people that were coming to the hotel weren't going to have time for everyone, just the bridesmaids. I also offered to have appointments made for my MIL and my SILs, but they ended up not wanting to.

Yes, of course grown women can make their own appointments, but I think it's nice to make it easy for your OOT guests. Plus, they'd have no idea where to go on their own, so what, then you're asking them to do their own salon research in a foreign country or state? Why have them go through all that when you can just book appointments for them at a place you know is good and makes sense, logistically.

Is what customary in those countries? Wanting to have your hair done for a wedding? Is there something weird about that that makes you think it's a foreign concept? I don't get it. I always get my hair done for a wedding. Not a crazy updo or anything, but a blowdry for sure.

No, just expecting the bride to schedule it for you. On top of all the other things she's doing. If I wanted it done, I would just book my own.

I did edit my post once I realized they were just asking her to book, not necessarily make deposits and/or pay.

OP never said people were expecting her to, just that they want to get their hair done, and how do they do that. I'm sure no one expects the bride to do that.

But if you’re from another country how would you know where to go? It doesn’t sound like they want the bride to schedule it. It sounds like they mentioned to her mom they would like to get it done and then mom talked to the bride.

OP, I think it would be super nice for you to find a salon near the hotel for them! I don’t think you’d be seen as rude for not doing it, but I think it’s something you can do fairly quickly that they’ll really appreciate.

That part isn't customary, just that they took care of it for me for their weddings (I'm not sure who but someone local did!). To be fair my mom *kind of* insinuated that I should add them to my appointment, and then asked what did I think about other places in the area. She's a little passive aggressive so I read between the lines on that one, but if I asked her to take care of it she would.

That's what I was thinking too, sure they can Google or Yelp but really if I can just do it for them it's one less thing they'll maybe need help with in August when I'm stressing over al the other details!

i didn't think about SIL since she lives so close to the venue, dammit. I'll ask her too. Thanks for the reminder!
