Hair and Makeup artist cancelled but kept money for the trial

J P, on July 7, 2020 at 10:22 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 13
I am a bridesmaid for my cousin's wedding on August. Her hair and makeup team cancelled on her a couple weeks ago (after telling her a couple months prior that they would still do her wedding). They have refunded for the day of hair/makeup services, but are keeping the money that she spent on the trial, which was pricey. Is there any way that she could get the money for the trial back, as they were the one who cancelled?

The contract only mentions a refund of wedding day services for a cancellation on the hair/makeup artist's part (but did not say if "wedding day services" would include the trial).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Did she have the trial already?

She did, unfortunately. At the time of the trial, they had told her they would still do her wedding despite Covid. They cancelled on her after this.

If she already had the trial, I don’t believe she is entitled to a refund.

Did the trial already occur before they cancelled? If so, I unfortunately understand why they kept they money for that, since the service was provided. Otherwise, if the trial was included as part of the wedding day services, or if the trial did not happen, then I agree that the money should be refunded since they were the ones that cancelled. I recommend that your cousin reach out to them to ask for a refund, and maybe reference the contract and state that the trial could be considered part of the wedding day services?

Because she already had the trial I don't think she is entitled to refund. It definitely sucks that this happened, but at least they gave her the money back so paid for services they didn't did do.

Then likely she's out of luck since she paid for a service she actually received.

If she had the trial then she is not entitled to a refund. The money she spent for the trial is paying for the services rendered that day.

Agree with prior comments that she isn’t entitled to a refund; however, it would be the good faith thing for them to do because she clearly isn’t going to get the full benefit that is implied by a trial.
I suggest she post negative reviews on the wedding websites for the company (assuming they didn’t cancel because leaving the business permanently!) and they will likely reach out to get her to change them and they can negotiate from there.
