Guests who may feel left out

Mayra, on March 22, 2022 at 10:15 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14
My venue is having an overflow area into the patio at a park. The main room, I just learned has to keep the door closed so that the amplified music does not “reach outside”. About 40 guests will be seated outside. 160 guests inside. Will they feel left out? Are places really strict in keeping doors closed at local parks?

I have to be honest, if I was seated outside of the main reception space, I would feel left out.

I’d be pretty annoyed tbh. Especially if they closed the doors. I might go home

I would feel like a B list guest if I were seated outdoors and separate from the main reception area. Like I wasn't good enough to be included indoors at the main event. Have your invitations gone out already? Is there a way you can pare down your guest list so that nobody is shut outside?

Oh yikes, I would definitely not separate your guests on the other side of a closed door. Not only do I think it will make them feel alienated and “B-listed”, but it could also expose them to bugs and inclement weather outdoors.

Yeah, I would be very salty if I were one of those unlucky guests. Don't treat your loved ones that way! Find a way to cut your list down by 40 people so everyone can fit inside.

Hi! If amplified music is the reason the venue insists on closed doors, would it be possible to lower the volume enough, to allow doors to remain open? If I were asked to sit away from the main area, I also would leave early. I know your intentions are in the right place, but noone wants to feel "less, than", even though that's not the intent.

Honestly if we got to a wedding and were seated outside with the doors to the main area closed, we’d probably eat and then leave. And I’d only eat because I know how costly catering is and wouldn’t want to be rude.

Can you have the music and dancing outside so your guests can eat dinner and enjoy altogether inside? Add cocktail tables and some chairs around the dancefloor, and some patio lights overhead. Whoever sold you on the patio as an "overflow" guest area does not have proper hospitality skills. Those persons will feel insulted and you will be ruining your valued relationships.

That's an odd setup for a wedding, did they know your guest count from the beginning and not mention the overflow area to you? As a guest, I would definitely feel left out.

Oh no, that's not going to work. Is there any way you could put the buffet out there or something so you can seat everyone inside? You can't seat guests out there with the door closed, that would be rude.

I’m easy going but I would leave if I was seated separately outside. Find a larger park venue or cut the guest list

I would be absolutely furious and it would probably really damage our relationship. There is nothing that would hurt my feelings more than feeling excluded, d-listed and an afterthought.

(sorry childhood trauma rearing its ugly head)
