Guests asking what to wear?

Alisha, on March 13, 2020 at 6:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 27
Hey everyone I'm not sure how to answer this question but some of our family members are asking what they should wear? We're not having any bridesmaids or groomsmen so I'm kind of confused at the question.. I've been telling everyone they can wear whatever they're comfortable with 🤷‍♀️

Any suggestions as to what I should say?

    Then that's the answer.

No one wants to be the odd one out, so that's why they're asking.

I would recommend putting your dress code on your website to help people out!

Have you decided what dress you would like people to wear? It sounds like you want casual so I would state that.

Check out this cheat sheet if you're not sure what dress code you should have: https://www.theknot.com/content/wedding-guest-attire-cheat-sheet

Like pp, I would state if dress code is casual, dressy casual, formal, black tie, etc.

I guess I thought they were asking if they had to match with my wedding colors or something? lol I honestly don't mind what anyone wears as long as they're comfortable and have a good time thats all that matters 😊

I don't think we have a dress code 🤔 I dont mind what anyone wears as long as they're comfortable. Its in August so I'm sure everyone knows to dress for the hot weather but thats pretty much it

If you don't mind me asking, is there a reason you wanted semi formal?

I guess I felt like with my venue and food served that I didn’t want people just coming in what they’d wear to a meal at McDonald’s aha ya know?

I know that you ultimately just want your guests to be comfortable, but I agree as a previous wedding guest where the dress code was vague I was so worried about over/under dressing! I just want our guests to be comfy as well, but I know the anxiety guests have, and I also don’t want it to be that some are in jeans, and others in full suits, so I’ve told Anyone who’s asked/listed on website “semi-formal,” elaborating suggestions of dress shirt/pants for men and long dresses etc for women. At the end of the day, whatever they come in is fine though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Especially because there Were a few people who came looking like that and they stuck out like a sore thumb since everyone else came dressed very nicely

Oh ok. I don't think anyone will come that casual but hey if thats what they want lol I just assumed people knew to dress nice because its a wedding but I dont want to say that and offend anyone. I also don't want people to have to buy new clothes just for our wedding. Idk I wasn't expecting that question it caught me off guard 😬

If you don't specify there will be people in long gowns and people in jeans. Believe me, not everyone has been to wedding or knows how to dress appropriately for such events.

I really think it's best to tell people what fits the formality of your event so think about your venue, menu and atmosphere of your event when responding to people.

You're right.. just feels so weird telling people what to wear 😬 We don't have that many guests and they've all been to weddings before so maybe I don't have anything to worry about

For no confusion, you can say dress pants/button down shirts for men, and dresses or dress pants for ladies.

Ohh the color thing makes sense. They don’t want to wear your bridal colors. Like one of my future mother in laws wants to wear “beige”. But I think it’s too close to my dress color.
