Guest transportation

Kelli, on February 5, 2020 at 10:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15
I have maybe 20 or so guests staying at a hotel that's about 15 minutes down the road from my venue. It's an open bar reception and it's in a very rural area so no city type luxuries like the hotel offering a shuttle service. Do I pay money for a service or no? My sister is hammering me to do it because she wants to drink. My fiancé is fighting the idea because everyone is an adult and should be able to be responsible and hold themselves accountable. I see both sides...

If you can afford it, a shuttle is a really nice detail for your guests. But I wouldn't forgo other things (open bar, dj, etc) to have it.

I agree with LB. I think it's a really nice gesture but it isn't a necessity. If you can swing it without sacrificing other things, I would. However, if it would put you way over budget, it's ok to skip.

Shuttle services can be quite expensive. I’m doing the Lyft Event vouchers: you pick the date, start and end time, and up to 5 destinations. Then the amount of people (ex 20) and the amount you think each person will need (day $20) all together it will come to $400 up front. However, what isn’t spent is given back to your bank 2 days after the party.

My hotel recommended Lyft Event too. Or you could do what my friends cousin did. They rented a passenger van (10 seater) and paid one of the cousins friend to shuttle. (They had to be old enough for insurance). I think that if you’re offering booze, it’s a great way for people to enjoy themselves and return safely

I wouldn't if you don't have the budget for it either. But it is nice to have as an option.

This is interesting and something to look into. We only have maybe 3 Uber or lyft drivers in the area, I was thinking about reaching out to them to see if I could hold their services for the night. It's a very country area 😂

I was going to look into the price of renting a van like that too!

Our hotel is 20 mins away and we are providing a shuttle. We would love our guests to bring the party back to the hotel’s bar and party with us so this is why we decided to do this. We also will be in an area that has very limited uber and Lyft drivers. It wasn’t terribly expensive.

I don't think you have to provide a shuttle. But if you decide to, I like this idea. People don't all have to come and go at once, like with a shuttle, and you don't have to worry about limited Lyft drivers since it's a rural area. Plus, a friend can make some money for a fairly easy night's work!

I'm not doing anything. We are getting married inside a State Park in a very rural area. We will have an open bar, but we are also ditching around 9:30 because neither of us are the partying type. That being said, not providing transportation makes people think about their choices. I also don't want to pay for people to get hammered... To each their own though!

If you can afford it, then yes. Our wedding was in a rural area so we paid for two 55 person buses to take people from the hotel to the venue & back.

It's nice, but not necessary. I think people should be able to make adult choices as well.

I would say if you can afford it then do it. We didn't want to do it because we're in a city with uber/lyft and like your fiance said, adults should be adults. But it's important to my in-laws so we're doing it.
