Guest photo sharing app

Kari, on April 23, 2021 at 9:03 AM Posted in Planning 13 14

I love photos! I was wondering if anyone has experience with or has researched photo sharing apps that would allow guests to easily share their photos from your wedding day. I've found an app called The Guest (which appears to be run by the Knot) that seems pretty good but I can't find pricing information anywhere.

Alternatively I've considered bringing back the good old disposable camera or trying to borrow a polaroid for the day, but these days I look at photos on my devices 99% of the time and feel like taking advantage of technology to share pics might be a better option.

The Guest app is free (unless they’ve changed something recently). I had friends use it for a late 2019 wedding. They included info about how to set it up on their website (unfortunately their website is no longer live so I can’t get the wording, but the app has a good FAQ section you could adapt!). I’m planning on using The Guest myself.

I do love the idea of disposables though. I always find them fun!

We're sticking with the hashtag! That way we'll be able to see it on multiple platforms. I know it may not be the most efficient, but I like the idea of it! I also created a custom Snapchat Geo filter (only $7) that covers the entire venue! I thought that was pretty cool.

Good to know. I always feel like its a gamble trying to implement technology you've never used before during a big event, so I'm glad to hear from someone who used it and liked it enough to implement at their own wedding.

Are you also having a wedding hashtag or just using The Guest? Do you think doing both would be confusing/too redundant?

I used The Guest, it was great!! When Initially downloaded it the app was free but you had to pay to setup an event. (It changed names/brands? After I started using it). It was $99 for 4 events I think, but I found a code to try it for free. I can’t say what the pricing looks like now as this was 3 years ago.

But it was easy to use and get pictures. Your guests just have to join your event, you will get an event code to share. And then they take pictures like normal using the camera on their device. There is no need for them to upload them or remember a hashtag or use a special app to take photos. Any picture they take during the time frame you specify automatically gets added. And they appear in real time so people that can’t attend can also join the event to see the pictures. I think 10 (out of 60) of our guests used it and we got about 450 pictures. It was nice to have pictures right away to look at once the event was over and on the honeymoon while we waited for pro pictures to come back.

My husband and I aren't big users of social media, and a bunch of our guests use it even less than we do. We did come up with a hashtag but I suspect we'll miss a lot of media because some people won't share photos on social media at all, or their preferred platform is one we don't use. I like the idea of a central repository that is hopefully a little more private, but only if it is easy enough to use so that people actually use it. I think going with just the hashtag makes perfect sense if you use a variety of social media platforms and your guests are all pretty active on them because there is zero learning curve then.

Thanks that is so helpful! What time frame did you end up specifying? I would be a bit worried that it would accidentally share photos I'm not supposed to see (like someone getting ready or a bathroom selfie or something), but I'm not really sure how much of an issue that would be. Do you know if The Guest allow videos and live photos to be added too or just still images?

What I would actually do is just using Google Photos or Airdrop or something that most users would have (Google Photos cans be used by Androids or iPhones, so that's a plus) That's what my friends and I do for birthday parties or anything like that! You could easily add a section on your website or put a sign up at your reception asking everyone to share photos on Google Photos with a specific email address (and could even make a dummy account with your wedding hashtag or something fun!). Just a thought from someone who likes to limit the number of apps she uses Smiley xd

I suppose I should have prefaced all of this with saying I’m a Millennial haha. So while my friend group liked the app, I’m not sure about the older crowd! It did seem like quite a few people successfully used it (as registered guests we all had access to the album, which is something to keep in mind if you don’t want that). I see someone above said it cost money to set up events, but I set up a sample & haven’t been required to pay so far...still researching that!

We are also doing a hashtag! I just really love social media—my undergrad thesis focused around hashtags—so even if no one uses it I 100% am havocs it haha

Awesome thanks! We're millennials too so I think it will be no problem for the majority of our guests. The few guests we have who would probably struggle with the app are ones who just struggle with operating their phone in general, and they also likely wouldn't use a hashtag either. It does look like The Guest used to cost money but has been free since 2018, so I'm going to check it out.

We'll probably keep our hashtag as well. I use IG all the time but steer away from other social media, but some of our guests may be expecting it and want to use it. Since both the app and hashtag are free, I don't think it would hurt to use both. I'd rather use both and have some redundancy than miss out on special moments!

    Not sure about live videos.
I did from just after the ceremony so like 3:15 (2:30 start time) to the end of the reception 9:00.
    I didn’t get anything inappropriate

I used The Guest app for our wedding, this past July, 2021. I HIGHLY recommend. This was so easy for me and our guests to use! Photos and videos of the wedding were uploaded live, to the app, during the wedding and guests were able to DL the app and upload photos/videos days after the wedding.

All of the photos show WHO uploaded them and are visible to everyone in the app, with your wedding code. All photos and videos shared can be downloaded by you. I am still downloading and uploading them to photo shops for prints. I am so very happy with the turnout of this app and has far beyond exceeded my expectations of it. Not everyone uses hashtags or social media, for that fact. This was so versatile and accommodating for the tech savvy and NON. Couldn't be happier and was a great feature to have while you're waiting for your photographer's wedding portraits. Blessing for me as my wedding photographer from Snappr has gone MIA and we are likely out of our wedding photos, as they have issued a refund. The photos and videos from this app are a prized possession at this point.

    This app is AMAZING

We ended up using The Guest as well. Unfortunately not a lot of our guests took advantage of it, and it was still a bit daunting for guests who aren't tech savvy, but I really loved seeing the guest photos that were shared. I would absolutely recommend it to others and use it again as well.

Has anyone set up a iPad for guest to take pictures or video as a digital guest book with theguest?
