Guest List Disappointment

Arica, on May 22, 2019 at 11:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
My future husband and I are getting married in 17 days!!! So excited!! The only thing im upset about and really trying not to be is the guest list. When we first started planning we agreed to keep it very small. Only my parents and sister, his parents and granny. Then we found the perfect venue that gave us availability to include two close friends at an affordable price. Then, $40 fo anyone else. We were both on the same page, I thought. His mom guilt tripped him into inviting his grandma and her husband(who he is not close to and lives in a different state). This upset me but I was okay with it because it is family and who am I to say they can't come. Then his best friend included his parents after we invited him since they are basically my FH "second parents" this was annoying bc now the guest list is growing even more and we are paying for all this and I really wanted to save as much money as possible for our honeymoon. But, again, I tried not to let it bother me because they are close and I even worked with his best friends mom for a while and they are sweet caring people. Well, his best friend and him went out with another friend they are reconnecting with after years of no contact. I guess his best friend invited him to the wedding and wouldn't take no for an answer. My FH didn't even tell me this, even after the other day I was in tears about the guest list growing and how I'm disappointed I don't get to have people on my side of the family come (my family is pretty estranged and I'm still trying to cope with that). Instead I found out he invited this friend I don't even know while we were writing down names of everyone invited so we could call the venue and get a final price. Well, I didn't take it well when I found out and just can't believe he didn't tell me and he actually seemed mad at me like I was overreacting. I'm trying so hard to be okay with it but I'm just not. I'm hurt and upset that this wedding is becoming more than we originally imagined. Am I being unreasonable? I figured the smaller we had it, we can tell people it's mainly just close family and the venue is small. We're mainly just saying our vows and eating cake then we are leaving for our honeymoon. I just don't know what to do.

You are not being unreasonable. I would be very annoyed with my FH if he started adding to the guest list on his own. That is a decision the two of you should be making together. You had already made a decision and your fiancé refused to stand up to his friend. It isn’t his friend’s wedding so his opinion doesn’t matter and it isn’t his decision to make. Your fiancé needs to have your back, not his friends.

I agree 100% with Jeana. It is not his decision to make alone and it is not his friends wedding so they have no say. If he truly insists they be there and you can agree on it, he should make them pay the extra guest fee. Otherwise he is being rude to you by going behind your back.

Thank you! I think that's what I'm most upset about. He didn't even ask me about confirming it or told them he would have to talk to me about it. I feel like im pretty chill about all the planning stuff amd if he just TOLD me how it went down, I would have been okay.

I agree with PP's. I would have been incredibly upset if my DH invited guests and kept that information to himself. It should be a joint decision. If your guest list keeps growing due to invitations being extended to his side of the family, either he isn't able to say no and stand up for what you mutually agreed upon OR he's not happy with what was mutually agreed upon. It's important for you both to be on the same page, so I would have a discussion with him.
