You don't have to. lots of people do like edible favors or i've seen people donate to a charity of their choice in lieu of favors. its really whatever you want to do.
we did beer koozies. ordered 100 for $135 from etsy.

I have a lot of out of town guests that will be coming so instead of favors my wedding coordinator told me that late night snacks are a good substitute which is something that I will probably do, but that's because I want to be a good host. Otherwise working at hotel and as I've handed out favors...favors are usually forgotten about, left behind or people even decline them.

Favors are 100% and unless they're food related, end up in the trash or collecting dust. Use the money toward something the guests will enjoy at the reception such as food/drinks or music.
