Guest dress change?

Lynne, on April 17, 2021 at 12:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
Hey! We have a wedding (as an attendee) where the ceremony is in a church at 12 then the cocktail hour/reception doesn’t begin until 4pm. Is it odd to change dresses in-between as a guest?

No. And most people won’t even notice.

I don't think anyone would notice as long as both are appropriate for the circumstances. We once went to a family wedding on the East Coast -- Catholic ceremony, with a HUGE gap.... I wore the same dress to both the ceremony and the very formal reception that night, but in between I changed out of my fancy dress (in the car as we pulled out of the church parking lot...) and into sweats, and then got dressed again at our hotel before we left for the evening reception.... I really didn't want to be in my cocktail-appropriate dress for 14+ hours! Smiley winking

As a guest, I've never heard of or seen this done but you do you. I would find it odd but I wouldn't be doing it, nor would I say anything if someone did.

From what I’ve seen in my area it is fairly common when there is a gap between for people to do this. I went to a wedding yesterday and anyone not in the bridal party wore dressy clothes but nothing formal to the ceremony then went back to the hotel and changed into their formal attire for the party.

If you’ve got that gap then no it isn’t but there wasn’t any gap at my wedding at all and one of the guests changed outfits and I knew cus she was the best mans wife who sat at our head table. So I really thought it was odd BUT because yours has a large gap I think that might be ok but I would just wear the same dress

Nope, this isn't odd at all. Everyone in my social circle does this for Catholic weddings. Typically, the ceremony is in the morning (around 11 or noon) and we wear church attire, then we go back to the hotel during the long gap, have lunch, and change into different attire for the reception. Nobody wants to wear 4 inch heels and a sparkly cocktail dress in a church! I've done this type of wardrobe change as a guest (at Catholic weddings with large gaps) probably 10 times by now. It's very common and typical

As a guest, not everyone, she carries in a suitbag to a restroom. Aside from long gaps, I have come from work before too late to change for a wedding, and been not dressy enough or too dressy, and also changed into a spare dress due to nursing leakage. Do make sure ceremony venue has rest rooms available.
