Group Tasting vs. Private tasting

Samantha, on January 24, 2015 at 4:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

We are getting married at the Audobon Center with Jeffrey Miller Catering. Included in our contract was either a private tasting or a group tasting. We decided to go with a group tasting and I was nervous, but I really liked it for several reasons:

1. We got to try so much more than we would in a private tasting.

2. It gave us a place to start, since we couldn't decide from just reading the menus.

3. We decided not to bring family, but it gave us an idea of what other people thought without the burden of opinionated family.

4. It gave a good reception feel, and put me in a better mindset for picking things.

5. It was a great date night and we were totally stuffed at the end!

The food was absolutely incredible. Everything was fresh, unique, and beautifully presented. Now we are going to choose our final menu, but not everything was at the group tasting. We both feel confident based off of the group tasting, what do you think? Is it a waste to do a private tasting too?

I would've preferred a group tasting if I can try more of the menu. Our caterer didn't offer that, but we knew what we liked and didn't like off of his menu.

We didn't have a choice, ours is a group tasting. I'm glad you liked yours, ours is Feb. 11! It starts with a 30 min. "cocktail hour" with open bar and hors d'oeuvres. Then 2 meal choices (exactly what we want to serve) for dinner. I think it will be fine but my parents (who are paying for the wedding) were not pleased that they could not attend (even for a fee).

I think as long as you got to taste the selections you wanted, there's no need for you to have another private tasting.

Our venue does huge group tasting with all of their appetizers, all of their entree choices (except premium), dessert options, wine, etc. It's a really nice way to see how they handle a large crowd and try out foods. We went last year before we booked and we are going again tomorrow

I'd honestly put more stock in the results of a group tasting; what JK said was spot on. You can see how the food is prepared for a group, which is often very different than what happens when they cook for two or four. If it was good, I wouldn't bother doing another one.

I have never even heard of a group tasting! That sounds better, though. I've gotta get mine scheduled! Smiley smile

If this is offered, we will definitely do a group tasting.

I have done both and I like the group tasting better. Our private tasting was in the office of the venue at another couples reception! Uh ok, not a big deal but I liked being able to taste all of the menu at one time. We need to go back in the coming few weeks to re-sample stuff since it has been about a year since I tasted the food.

I'm getting married in October with Jeffrey Miller Catering at the American Swedish Historical Museum and we did the group tasting too. It was definitely the way to go. The food was incredible, the wine was tasty, and it was great getting to try a variety of food instead of the limited selection of a private tasting. Plus, it was fun to talk to other couples who had booked with them and bounce ideas off of each other. Group tasting is the way to go!

Thank you for all of the feedback! You guys put my mind at ease. I don't think we'll pay for an additional private tasting. Smiley smile

Yes!! We had a group tasting with Jeffrey Miller (fellow Swedish museum bride- what what!), and we had the most fun. I was a little worried about it being awkward and not getting much accomplished, but it was really fun getting to meet fellow couples who are in the same boat and get honest opinions from people who are going to be SUPER invested in the experience. I don't eat meat, and quite frankly don't trust my fiances opinion 100% on food (he would order bacon covered everything), so the extra feedback was key,

It was also held at the Racquet Club- so it was a baller date day overall.
