Group photo at wedding

Colleen, on May 18, 2016 at 11:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

We are having a smallish wedding, about 45 guests total. We are getting married at the same place as the reception. It is a former restaurant/banquet hall on the water. We are getting married on the deck (weather permitting) and having the reception primarily inside, with guest wandering out to the decks. Since it is a small wedding, I want to have a group photo with everyone all in one picture. I mentioned it to the photographer at our initial meeting and he thought it was a great idea, has a great wide angle lens, etc. Has anyone ever done this? If so, when did you do it? Everyone would be gathered outside for the ceremony so I was thinking right after the ceremony, before cocktail hour? But how do you make people stay there and will that be awkward? If we try to do it later, after the guest have gone in for cocktail hour, it would be like herding cattle to get everyone back outside or wherever/in one place. Love the idea but need help with execution!

I would definitely do it right after the ceremony. People normally wait until the BP has excited the aisle to disperse, so you could do it then, so don't hide after you walk down the aisle, if that makes sense. If you stick around, people will get the hint.

Or you could post a sign/print in your program your intention so they have a "heads up"

You can kiss at the end of the aisle and the everyone will likely be looking anyway. Once they see the photographer be can say something too.

Do it right after the ceremony, and before you do any other photos. Once the group photo is done(which will take 5-10 minutes tops) then your guests can go enjoy themselves/food/drinks, while you finish other photos.

We did this at my brothers wedding, and they waited until just before dinner, so it was definitely harder to herd everyone in the right direction.

It is awesome seeing the pictures of everyone who attended all together though.

We're planning to do group photos with everyone immediately after the ceremony: celebrant, immediate family, sponsors (Filipino tradition), bridal party, relatives, friends, and all guests.

ETA: We're doing them in groups because we're having a slightly bigger guest list.

Right after the ceremony is your best bet because everyone will be in that one area at once

We did it after the ceremony and right before cocktail hour (before we left to do Bride/Groom photos), We had our officiant announce it.

At one of my beach locations, there is a flight of steps. The photographer goes up and shoots down at the guests -- right after the ceremony.
