Groomsmen

Carissa, on June 13, 2020 at 6:29 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

My FH was in his friends wedding recently and he was asked to buy matching shirt, tie, belt, shoes, pants for the wedding. We are renting suits, but he wants to ask his groomsmen to buy a specific shirts, belts, and shoes. I feel like this is a big ask. I said just say wear brown shoes and matching belt, but he doesn't want it to look mismatched. Thoughts?

And I thought it was brides that went overboard

Asking your bridal party to buy shoes and belt seems a bit much to me. Shoes are highly personal, they don't feature much in photos, and they may not be broken in on time. And a belt?? Is the photographer going to do closeups of each belt buckle or something??

I can see when someone wants things cohesive but I feel like as long as the colors are the same like black shoes then it should be ok? My groomsmen all just wore black shoes and black belts and as pp said you don’t notice them much in photos

No one is going to notice the shoes and the belt, just let the groomsmen wear black shoes and black belt, or brown shoes and brown belt.

Like others have said, no one is going to notice. I would just ask them if they can all wear white shirts and black shoes and belt. I wouldn't make them go out and purchase identical looking items. You could also see if you could rent these items. Not sure where you are looking to get the suits though. We choose to have them in tuxes and shoes and shirts are included when you rent tuxes. Tuxes you don't wear belts with though. If he insists on identical items then I think you guys should cover those costs.

I think you’d be fine asking for a specific color. No one is going to pay attention to the shoes or belts and like a pp said they might have issues breaking shoes in.

My husband’s groomsmen already both had black suits, so we asked them to wear those. They weren’t the same, but nobody noticed or cared. You’re right, your husband is going overboard.

Any reason they can’t just rent those items along with the suits? Also no one is going to notice the groomsmen’s shoes as long as they’re the same color. And belts......? Why would anyone see their belts if they’re wearing suit jackets??

If you want a specific look, you have to be prepared to foot the bill yourselves..it's not the groomsmen's responsibility in this case. Even so, no one will notice if they match or are a certain color.

No one will care or notice the GM’s shoes and belts. But if your FH wants to go that far, then he should purchase those items for the groomsmen.

We tried to keep what our bridesmaids and groomsmen spent at $200 or less. Also, it sounds like they will be buying all those things separately but you may be able to get all those things as a package deal somewhere like Mens wearhouse

Standard brown shoes/belt would be fine. If there is something very specific that you'd want (like a specific belt buckle for instance) I would suggest that you guys buy it for them. I specifically want our groomsmen to wear burgundy suspenders, and this can't be built into our rental package, so I am purchasing that for all the guys/ring bearer. I'm not asking them to incur that cost.
