Groomsmen Ties

Stephanie, on November 16, 2017 at 1:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Y'all, I've been so busy this week I haven't had time to visit the forums! I'm facing a decision I didn't realize I would need to care about: groomsmen ties.

My BMs are wearing the "blue jay" shade of dresses from Azazie, but this same shade is not available in the ties that they offer. Rather than trying to match the shade through a different brand, I'm thinking of having the guys in a different color altogether. There's a lot of greenery involved at the venue (hedge-lined stone path functions as our aisle) and we'll have greenery in our bouquets (and hopefully in my hair.. still working on that decision too).

So.. Would a hunter green tie go well with my bridesmaid dresses? I kind of like the idea of having them wear a different color so it's not so matchy.

ETA: the groomsmen will be wearing light gray pants with suspenders. FH will have a gray suit.

Ehh. I'm not sure if Hunter Green would go all that well.

Maybe you can go with a plain colored tie (black, grey, white) and their bouttonieres can match the dress?

@AR Right? I'm on the fence about it. I wish I could just have some people try on these color combinations for me so I could see it for myself. Good idea for other tie color options!

My colors are coral and sage - my girls will wear coral and I want the boys ties to be sage to tie that color in! Maybe you can do something like that with your complimentary wedding color!

No on the hunter green. I like @Almost's suggestion about a patterned tie - maybe something with the blue jay-ish color in it.

@MFB no jackets, but most of the pictures I've seen on pinterest and google have the guys with small boutonnieres attached to the suspenders. I don't think it looks bad, but I had to double check because I couldn't remember and they tend to be indiscreet.

@first I like the patterned tie idea too!

See, I never have to think about ties.. and now FH wants my input since he doesn't want to make color decisions without me and I knew I could look to you all for help! Smiley smile

I would check other places to order ties to match. Having a Swatch on hand to match whether to order from a walk in store or online. The shade might be a little off but if it's really close, that would look better than pulling a color out of no where..even if it matches the greenery. Just an opinion Smiley smile

If you're an Amazon shopper, you can buy a whole bunch so you can see them with the BM dress and returns are super easy. FH is a smart cookie - LOL!

Check amazon. My bridesmaids wore a bright lilac colored dress and the only purple ties at men's wearhouse had ugly stipes, and I wanted a solid lilac. DH found ones that matched right on the money. Give it a try.

I don't like the hunter green ties with those dresses. I do love the patterned tie idea though! Check out The Tie Bar (online www.thetiebar.com, or showrooms in Boston/Chicago/NY), they have SO many patterns, colors, fabrics, textures, etc. and you can filter by color. They have a Wedding shop, but they have even more choices in the "regular" section too.

@katie thanks! Maybe I'll leave it to nature to handle the greenery. Smiley smile

@MFB I wasn't sure about the idea either, but FH really wants the look. Seeing pictures of it done in other outdoor weddings made me see that it wasn't all that out of place after all. I guess we're not going to have as formal of a ceremony as others, so it doesn't seem silly in our context. Smiley smile

    @first GOOD call!

The women in our WP were in shades of grey and the folks in suits wore pink ties, H had a pink bowtie. i like the idea of a patterned tie that picks up the blue with maybe some grey. in ours i loved that the pink and grey complemented each other without being too loud.

Matching the mens' ties the BM dresses in a solid color is a very high school prom look.

I also think hunter green would look awful.

I vote for finding a patterned tie- stripe, paisley or pin dot with some of that blue (or something close to it).

I hesitate to share this because I think it's a terrible idea, but if you must have matching colors...

If you really want matching colors, I would check out knottytie.com. We sent in a swatch and they matched the fabric for ties for the groomsmen. They have a lot of patterns, not just solid. Pretty reasonable prices too.

Thanks for the help, @muriel! I'm definitely leaning towards not matching the tie to the dress, so I'm kind of glad the shade isn't available on Azazie so it forces me to think outside the box. Smiley smile

Great ideas, @caitlin and @kris! I really appreciate your ideas and help!

I think grey, black, or pattern with similar blue. Do you have an accent color? I dont think the green is the best choice. We're not doing jackets either, too hot for our August wedding. We are doing vests and ties, and sleeves rolled up (I love that relaxed but kinda formal look). Also tossing around the idea of patterns.

@jill we're going to have blush mixed in with our florals, but FH isn't down with wearing "pink" ties haha gotta love him. I'm leaning toward the pattern idea or going with gray now Smiley smile Thank you!!

A blue patterned tie would be lovely. No bout, though. It just looks odd on a shirt.

Definitely a patterned tie with a similar shade of blue in it, but since it's patterned it won't be obvious if it isn't exact. The hunter green I don't think would look great. Greenery in floral arrangements to me is the equivalent of wearing blue jeans.....the blue of the blue jeans doesn't really count and other parts of the outfit shouldn't match it, it counts as a neutral piece and matches anything. Same with greenery. The greenery is neutral for its intent and purpose and isn't part of your wedding colors. Unless of course you make the green a part of your colors in other ways such as ribbons, napkins, and other decor. But if the only other thing that is green leaves and such in floral arrangements it wouldn't look right.

We used knottytie and LOVED them. They came out so great and they were great to work with. You tell them a color palette and they have TONS of different styles. You can adjust where you want each color and they'll help you to make sure everything matches. Really, couldn't say enough about them.

H's tie and pocket square. Him and BM wore the same and then the fathers had a tie in the print of H's pocket square.
