groomsmen-friends or family?

megan and david, on January 12, 2010 at 4:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Opinions wanted-

My FH's only wish was that he didnt have to choose groomsmen at the wedding. That was playfully veto'ed by myself and his mother (we want a bridal party). He didn't want to have his two brothers and BIL as his groomsmen thus only having one "friend". It's not that he doesn't "want" them, but he knows he wouldnt have as much fun.. terrible to say.. but..

His Mom is upset that he isn't choosing family. She has a point. Blood is much thicker than water. But shouldn't he choose? He is now feeling forced to un-ask his friends, and feels awkward. I'm on the outside of this one, thankfully. I feel for both sides, and since I don't have siblings, can't really have an opinion- just want them both to wind up happy in the end-

I'm not asking anyone in my family to be in the bridal party. I think my family will be sad I'm asking FH's sister to be a BM but in the end, it's my wedding. I feel bad for your FH though =(

Well my hubby is doing a mix of friends and family however groomsmen should be the ones he is truly close to. My husband is far closer to one brother than the other so that is who he asked. I think the decision should be his my MOH has been my best friend for nearly 14 years and may as well have been born my sister as far as im concerned so that is who I want next to me

I like the idea of having family but I can understand how somebody could prefer friends. (they are your friends after all, and not everyone always gets along or likes their family) I'm having both my sister and his sister as well as one friend, and as neither of us have any brothers or male cousins or anything, he is going with only friends. If I wasn't close to the sisters, I would have gone with friends.

His mom is wrong. It is HIS day too and HE should choose who HE wants to stand by him. Yes, family is important to us but so are our friends, especially those that have always been there through everything. Sometimes we choose our friends to go in a crisis over family because they don't judge as much and truly listen. But no matter what, his mom should stay out of it and let it be his ultimum decision. Good Luck!

What if he made his brothers ushers...that way theu are involved and honored but he still gets to have the people he is closest to stand next to him.

I agree with Traci, he should choose who he WANTS to stand beside him on this big day, not his mother. I'd just try to compromise by having his sibs be part of the ceremony somehow, either as a reader or maybe as ushers.

His mother who wanted a bridal party should respect her son's wishes. I think one reason he might not of wanted groomsmen is so not to hurt his mom by not asking his brothers.

Have them all be his grooms men. 2 guys could escort each girl and it keeps everyone from having their feelings hurt!

He should have who he wants. its nice to have family involved but if you are closer with a friends then there is nothing wrong with having them stand up there with you. it should be who your fh wants there next to him. his mom should have no say in it.

How many friends has he asked? Any reason he can't have the friends AND the brothers? If it's a matter of even numbers, sides don't need to be even these days and it's better than hurting the feelings of everyone involved.
