Grooms cake?

Sarah, on August 10, 2020 at 1:27 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
So my grandmother mentioned doing a grooms cake, but I had never heard of it before. Has anyone on here done one or is anyone planning on doing one? If you have can I see a picture please?

It is usually a small cake that is tailored to something the groom loves like sports, hobby, etc... It is basically a personalized cake for them. Smiley smile Think of his favorite cake flavor and something he likes. Tons of ideas on Pinterest.

I honestly skipped it because it’s just one of those expenses that’s optional

I've heard of it on social media but never in real life. Seems like an extra expense for me. Also I feel like sharing a cake is kind of symbolic and it makes zero sense to have separate cakes for the couple unless one individual has some serious dietary restrictions.

It's common in the South but not usually done elsewhere. It's completely optional and an extra expense. Just include the groom in planning aspects to make it his day too. If she wants to cover the costs, that's her choice.

We didn’t technically have a grooms cake, but my husband wanted strawberry shortcake and my baker said that wouldn’t be a good layer for the cake. So, I did a small cake of strawberry short cake for him. He didn’t even wind up getting a piece!
I’ve never seen an actual grooms cake in real life, but from what I’ve heard it typically tends to be chocolate rather than the white/wedding cake of the actual wedding cake. And as others have said it’s usually done up in one of his hobbies or interests. I guess it’s a southern thing but i live in the south and like I said I haven’t seen one. It’s totally not necessary.

I’m a pastry chef and I do wedding cakes for a living. I’m in the Midwest and grooms cakes aren’t super common. I did have a bride order one recently as a surprise for her husband. It will be shaped like a baseball diamond and be STL Cardinals theme. This worked out because they only wanted a 2-3 tier cake but expected 250 guest. So we won’t have to do as many sheet cakes. I think they are cute, especially when they are a surprise.

My mom had one when she and my step dad got married, but we’re skipping out on it. My fiancé didn’t even know that was a thing when I mentioned it haha, so we’re just going with the main cake.

I've always thought this was a really fun tradition, so we did a last minute groom's cake at our rehearsal dinner! 🍰

We did not do a groom's cake, but I have been to wedding where there was one. I didn't care to have one for a few reasons... first, out cake was plenty big enough and we had a few other desserts so I didn't see the need. And also there wasn't anywhere to put it other than the table with our wedding cake and i didn't want it to take away from our cake. But, lots of people have them!!

We aren’t having a cake at all, so it wouldn’t make sense for us to do one. I’ve heard of them, but I’ve never seen one at a wedding in the northeast. My sister and BIL did have a cake that was in his preferred flavors at the rehearsal dinner, but the actual wedding cake should be something both people enjoy anyway.

If you're not having a cake at all I wouldn't even worry about it! I do agree the wedding cake should be something both people agree on.
