Groom's cake

My fiancé didn’t want a design but he loves chocolate and Oreos. So I’m having this made with chocolate, cookies n cream filling and the crushed Oreo topping. He’s going to love it.

I don't have a picture of it yet but my FH wanted red velvet very badly for our wedding cake but my FMIL and I shot him down (it's a summer wedding and red velvet was too heavy). I am going to order him a small groom's cake of red velvet through our venue and surprise him with it at the reception. I'm thinking ours will be a single layer round cake with chocolate ganache and some chocolate flakes. Nothing super fancy but still looks professional/presentable.

I (jokingly) showed FH this cake topper and HE LOVED IT. For some reason he thought that that would be our cake topper and was very disappointed when I said no. We had initially said no groomscake but now I want to surprise him with one and have that cake topper on it.

This is what my FH is doing! The only thing that will be fondant is the golf ball. Everything else is buttercream. The bottom tier will be chocolate fudge cake with chocolate ganache, the middle will be cookies and cream with marshmallow filling, and the golf ball will be almond wedding cake!

Can someone please educate me more on "Grooms Cake".

This is one area that I am pretty dense.

What are they for? When are they served? Where are they placed? etc etc
