Gray Suit with Royal Blue Tie/boutonniere?

Amy, on July 10, 2018 at 8:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

Hi all,

My FH has a gray suit from his best friend's wedding (he was a groomsman) it looks like it will just be him and his BF as his groomsman for ours, so he wants to save them both money and time and use those suits.

I don't really have a huge issue with it, except I'm terrible with colors and don't know if the gray suit will work with a royal blue tie/boutonniere.

It's kind of this grey (wouldn't call it particularly light or dark, somewhere mid range):

And I see the pic has a navy tie, but we are definitely doing a more royal (brighter) blue. Can anyone advise on if this would look okay?

Edit: I can find lots of examples online but I'm still not sure if it works. Examples:

Hi Amy!! I love this look!! The royal blue ties are a nice contrast to the grey suits. Grey is such a great neutral that's not too light and looks good on everyone. Adding the royal blue will be a nice pop of color to brighten things up. Will your bridesmaids be in a similar shade of blue or something else?

I like the blue with the grey. But that’s up to you if you like it. It’s your wedding day

This is actually what my FH is doing color wise for our wedding and it looks great in person. I love the look myself!

Does it sound odd to say I don't know? The brightness of the blue kind if seems to clash with the suit in some pictures but I wonder if thats just a fabric issue? Like some are more shiny and some are more matte?

Bridesmaid s will be in Royal blue. I hadn't thought about that bringing the look together.

I think maybe I'm seeing the pop as a clash and as I mentioned I wonder how much the fabric style contributes...

I'm awful with all aethetics. Truly!

I generally don't have any mental image of what the groom is wearing, as long as it's well tailored. So it's hard to say what I want and FH just wants to save the money and time lol. I just want to make sure I won't look back on pics and be like ugh, why didn't someone tell me this would look bad?

Ah, maybe it would help to see in person. He has the suit but no tie. I'm trying to figure out if I like it before we spring for one..

Lol, no worries!! I totally understand! Fabric contributes some but not much! The suits can be any fabric honestly and it'll look fine with both the ties and the bridesmaid dresses. I think the only thing that may be a little hard to pull together would be heavier wools but other than that, the suits as pictured will be fine!
