Gown Preservation

Toni, on September 8, 2010 at 8:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on gown preservation. Do you think it is necessary? How much is the going rate for preserving a wedding gown, do you think?

I work at a dry cleaners and for our shop to preserve and box a gown it's around $125, a little more or less depending on the detailing on the dress.

My cousin advised me to do that b/c she simply put hers in one of those storage bags that shrink up and the air gets pushed out, and hers is now yellow.

I was advised to have my dress preserved. Be sure to ask what kind of preservation the cleaners do. I called one and they just cleaned and pressed it in house and put it in a box, it was going to cost $110. They directed me to another cleaners that sent the dresses to another city to some company that specializes in wedding dress preservation and they do a better preservation job. I was told the dress would not need to be taken out every few years to air so it would not yellow. It ended up costing me around $155 for my dress and veil.

Anywhere from 125 - 250; you don't have to preserve your gown, you can also donate it to charity

Wow, and does it have to be done right away after the wedding? I have two dresses I love and looking for a great price for both.

You are going to find out that there are many opinions out there about whether you should get a gown preserved or not. Some believe you should clean the gown wrap it in acid free tissue paper and place in an acid free box and that is all needed. Preservation companies say they treat your gown with something to keep it from yellowing. I have seen gowns 10 to over 50 years old that were professionally preserved and they come out the box with very little change in the color. On the other hand, gowns that are cleaned and left hanging in a plastic garment bag, will definitely yellow. That is what happened to my 33 year old gown. So I am one who believes that... If you want to keep your gown for future generations and want to insure that the color and the condition of it stays in good shape, then you should have it professionally preserved.
