Got our marriage certificate! Although there's a slight error that's going to bother me...

Marissa, on October 23, 2020 at 4:25 PM Posted in Married Life 0 10

So this may be long but here I go, when we first went in to get our marriage license and fill out the application at the county clerk office, my FH at the time didn't know what state his father was born (his father wasn't there when he grew up and he has no relationship with him.) So they told us to just mark his place of birth as "Unknown." Well that same day when we got home, I found my FH's birth certificate and it said his father was born in CA. I called the county clerk and they said that's fine if it says "Unknown" right now, you can change it after you turn in your license.

So then the wedding day comes and our officiant accidentally signs on the wrong line where his address is supposed to be. This is fine as well, since it can still be fixed later on. But, then the day after our wedding our officiant goes out of town for about 1.5 weeks. I went in to turn in the marriage license to the county clerk and they said that they need the officiant to come back in and sign again. They said he can come back to sign it after his vacation, so I just waited till he came back, and that was fine too.

Soooo yesterday he came back from his vacation and today we both drove down to the county clerk to get his extra signature and fix his error. After that, his error was all fixed and I was issued our official marriage certificate! We left the county clerk office and when I got home, I looked at the marriage certificate and noticed I forgot to mention to change my now husband's father's place of birth from "Unknown", to "CA" 🤦‍♀️ I quickly called up the county clerk office where I just was, and they said "it's too late I can't change it since it's an official document now, but it's still fine that it still says 'Unknown'. It won't affect anything." Which is good, but it just bother's me that it says that and doesn't match my now husband's birth certificate. Uhhh *sigh* just another thing I get stressed out about but I know it really isn't a big deal. Just wanted to share. Wondering if this happened to other brides? I'm in CA by the way.

Irritating, yes. At the end of the day, it means absolutely nothing. You’re married to your best friend!

I was kinda worried when filling out the paperwork cuz neither of my parents were born in this country. They were technically born in the Soviet Union, which doesn't exist anymore so I was like "uhhhh....what do I put?" Honestly, unless you go through the name change process, you are unlikely to ever look at that document again unless you happen to need it for something years down the line.

Honestly, I think you are overthinking it. Let it go and enjoy being married to your new hubby.

That's good to know! Thanks! I will be going through the name change process and the county clerk office said it won't affect that, so I should be good!

Just think about how often you look at your birth certificate. You will like at your marriage certificate at about the same frequency.

Its unlikely that you are ever going to look at your marriage certificate. I wouldn't worry about it. It will probably bother you less as time goes on.
