Got my dress!

Nikki, on January 21, 2020 at 1:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
I just picked up my dress from David's Bridal, and scheduled my first fitting appointment! I tried on a size 16, and we ordered a 14, the 16 fit well but I'm working on loosing weight, so it would be too big at that point. The 14 is perfect!!! Fitting isn't until October, so now it gets to sit in a closet for 9 months....any tips to make sure it stays fresh and beautiful until then?Got my dress! 1

Picture is the size 16 I originally tried on. Didn't have time to get a new picture today...

Did it come in a garment bag? If not then Amazon has some good ones for a decent price. Make sure it's either hanging straight or laying down flat too

I would keep it in a dark closet in the bag

Cloth garment bag (not plastic) in a dark cupboard. Air it out every couple of months. Make sure it’s out of the way of any pets you may have. Hang it by the hanging straps.

I would keep it in a closet that doesn’t get used often (so it stays fairly dark) and keep it zipped up in a garment bag.

Agree with others on a cloth garment bag (NO PLASTIC), stored in a dark room or closet, and not in a room that's really humid. Be sure to use the hanging straps under the arms to support the weight of the dress, and if there is a hanging loop underneath the train put that over the top of the hanger as well. Those ribbon loops are designed to support the weight of the dress without stressing the dress fabric. If you have the space (we didn't), it's ideal if you can lay the garment bag out flat rather than hang it, but, daughter's dress hung for nearly a year and it was perfectly fine. Congrats!

Thank you all for the advice!!
I got it at David's bridal, and they did give me a cloth garment bag with it! Yay! The dress is still in the plastic though, so im guessing i should take it out? I dont think it's sealed at the bottom (the plastic). My mom said she had a place in her closet for it, which is a dark corner and hopefully cool, but she didn't realize how long it would be, so hopefully we can find somewhere else!. Hopefully i can help with the humidity, as we live in Florida, and summers are not kind when it comes to that.

Definitely take it out of the plastic ASAP! It will trap humidity/moisture and that can damage your dress. The "breathable" cloth bag will protect it just fine. As others mentioned, make sure pets can't get near it (there have been more than a few brides with pet hair issues and at least one whose cat did the "unthinkable" to her dress). Also, be careful if the dress will be stored in a house with smokers -- it might pick up strong odors (downside of a breathable dress bag, but airtight plastic is a MUCH bigger risk). If your mom's house is super humid, perhaps look into a dehumidifier for the room where your dress will be stored but I'm sure there are plenty of brides whose dresses survive FL summers just fine. Good luck!
