Gopro as videography alternative?

Julia, on March 9, 2018 at 10:42 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
Our photographer said they would film the ceremony, speeches, and dances. We’re really not interested in a full blown videographer experience. However I heard about having little video cameras for guests to pass around and film a well wishes message, or film people dancing, or other random stuff. Anyone done this? Thoughts or advice on how to

We are having a videographer for 4 hours, but besides that we are setting up 3 Go Pro's in the barn to collect photo's and video throughout the night. We are not having anyone passing them around, they will be set up where most won't see them. We were at a wedding where they put them out for guests to use and they weren't touched once the dancing got going.

I think it depends on the wedding crowd. Because there are some people who won't want to film anything. It's better to have maybe a few of them set up around the room. Good luck!

We were originally going to have someone film just our ceremony, dances and speeches with a GoPro. The thought of having guests pass them around never crossed my mind, I would be worried it would get lost somewhere and i would never get it back. We got super lucky and our photographer is expanding her business and is bringing on a videographer who needs practice so they are filming our wedding and making us a video for the cost of a vendor meal.

Do you have a gopro already? I mean, it doesn't hurt anything to set it up, but you may not get what you are really expecting from it. Quality of the video is pretty poor. If you have one already and know what it will do, go for it. I would just hate to see you go out and buy one, thinking that you are going to get something really good from it.

Gave my sister a go pro. Horrible idea. Videos were crap, all you can hear is her screaming over the music, too dark. On 132gb, she got less than 1gb of footage, none of which is useable.

I would only do this if you don't care what you get. We set up a video camera for the ceremony and got absolutely no good footage. That was more than okay with us, we had the camera and we set it up with zero expectations, the photos were way more important to us. As long as you are expecting nothing, and any footage captured is a bonus for you, it can't hurt to set it up.

I have to say it depends on the go pro model. It doesn't do well in low light and the video quality can be grainy when looking at it in full resolution (i.e. on a TV).
