good song for a dance with my mom, who is battling cancer

lfossum, on July 28, 2009 at 6:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Looking for a good song, to use as a mother and daughter first dance, my mom has been dealing with cancer for the last few years, she found out she had breast cancer on mothers day a couple of years ago, and had a dbl mastectomy and it has just been popping up everywhere else. I had heard a song that a daughter did with her mother and it was a year ago, and of course I misplaced my note....any ideas????

If you don't mind country, Love Can Build A Bridge by the Judds might work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KMriSdmr5I (sorry for the dated music video)

I want to suggest something that is outside of the box. Most people feel there are rules or boundaries to what you can do at a Wedding. The best message you can send to your Mom would be a message sent in your own words. Pick out a great song like "I'll stand by you" by the Pretenders or something like it. Then, we actually extend the beginning instrumental of the song, by using a song's instrumental version and/or looping capabilities, to about 30-60 seconds. Then we record a message (30-60 seconds in length) from the Bride and/or Groom and embed it into this beginning part of the song. As soon as your message is complete, we time the vocals from the song to begin seamlessly within a couple of seconds. This will easily become one of the highlights of your Wedding, and be so special to your Mom. Let us know if we can help. (BTW - our selected charitable organization for 2009 is Susan G. I'm so sorry about your mom, I will pray for the best for her. I don't know if you are a fan but if you are looking for something that is about a mother daughter realtionship Taylor Swift has this song called "Best Day". It takes you through the years starting from when she was 5 to being grown up and talks about how her mom has always been there and how greatful she is. The chorus goes "I had the best day with you today". I love it! I'm going to make a special DVD with pictures on it to this song and give it to my Mom before the wedding to say thank you for all she has done/does all the time. Then I'm going to surprise her with a dance to it at the reception. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=memsP8-k5Ew that is a link to the song with the lyrics.

    "She's Somebody's Hero" by Jamie O'Neal

She's never pulled anyone from a burning building

She's never rocked Central Park to a half a million fans, screaming out her name

She's never hit a shot to win the game

She's never left her footprints on the moon

She's never made a solo hot air balloon ride, around the world,

No, she's just your everyday average girl (but)

    She's somebody's hero

A hero to her baby with a skinned up knee

A little kiss is all she needs

    The keeper of the cheerios

The voice that brings Snow White to life

    Bedtime stories every night

And that smile lets her know

    She's somebody's hero

    oh oh

She didn't get a check every week like a nine-to fiver

But she's been a waiter, and a cook and a taxi driver

For twenty years, there at home, until the day her girl was grown

Giving all her love to her was her life's ambition

But now her baby's movin' on, and she'll soon be missin' her

But not today, those are tears of joy runnin' down her face

    Chorus

Dammit, every time I hear that Jaime O'Neal song (or apparently READ the lyrics) I get choked up! I'm having a combined dance - first me and Mom and then me with my stepdad, so that song wont work. But if it were just me and Mom, I would definitely use that. I like the idea of the photo DVD, maybe I'll do that...

Thank you so much everyone, I really like all the songs, I have a few in mind now, I would really like something that is heartfelt, i know we will both probably be crying, but hey thats ok.....I really like DJ to YOU idea, if I am understanding right I could say a little speech and it could be recorded in the first part of the song, and then playied as we dance, since I know I will not have the strength to say it myself at that moment......anyother time no problem

Glad you like the idea. We do it with Brides and Grooms to each other all the time, as well as Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dances. The best way you could do this is to actually talk to your Mom in the first person rather than making it a narrative. This would make it very special to your Mom. Does your DJ service offer this type of customization? Call us if we can answer any other questions for you. You can have your DJ give us a call if you would like as well. Thanks, Kevin

This isn't exactly a mom/daughter song, but I've always loved it and recently it was on So You Think You Can Dance, and the dance was a about a woman with breast cancer and OMG I was bawling watching it. It's such a sweet song. There wouldn't be a dry eye in the place!
