Good Engagement gift?

Munchkin9218, on July 24, 2017 at 9:20 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

Good Morning all!!

So, my FH's younger sister just got engaged to her longterm GF (Hooray!!) We're all very excited, especially since FH and I already have plans to fly out and visit them in early september! However, FH has asked me to help him figure out what would be a good engagement gift for us to take with us for them! FH is very close to this sister and really wants to get them something nice.

When we got engaged one of my family members sent us this beautiful wooden frame with our names carved into it. I suggested something like this to FH and he was worried they might not use it. I am a little stuck on what might be a good engagment gift now. I don't think it should be big or fancy but I do want it to be nice and meaningful.

Did you have something you received when you got engaged that you absolutely loved? Or any suggestion on what a good gift might be?

Maybe some wine glasses with their initials engraved? I got a pair of those and I love them. What does your FSIL and her FW like?

FSIL is very tomboyish and I know her FW is very girly and into makeup and runs her own make up youtube channel. They are a total opposites attract. I do know they both love their dog! Part of the issue is, even though FH and I facetime his sister all the time, I haven't met her in person yet because they live so far away, and I have only spoken to her FW a couple of times. With that and the fact that their interests are so different, makes it hard to figure out what something they would like is.

They just moved into a new house, so I wanted to maybe find something for that

My favorite gift I got was a stamp with our names and address. I have used it hundreds of times especially with all the mailing of STD and invites and thank you's that comes along with getting married

Someone got us an acrylic serving tray- we never would have thought of it or registered for it, but we use it all the time. We also got a nice bottle of champagne with a bottle carrier/corkscrew that was really nice.

We actually are about to order our own address stamp off of Etsy!! I am sure we could order one for them too! That is a great idea!

@katie - While the lowes GC would be great I'm sure, I know my FH wont want that because he will think it is too impersonal, but we could certainly add a small one on top of a gift!

I agree with Melinda; go to etsy and you'll find all kinds of great stamps. I also like the state shaped cutting boards.

@Kate - A holiday ornament is a good idea too! I am sure they would love one for their first christmas in the new house!

Thank you so much for all the input and keep the ideas coming! - I'm putting a list together for FH husband so he can help pick out which idea he likes best!

If they celebrate Christmas, we got his sibilings nice ornaments with their names and date engaged. We actually never received one, but I'll probably buy one for us because I think they're great.

Otherwise, we got a super cool wooden clock with our names and dates, some neat picture frames with names and quotes and a bar bottle opener (like for the wall) that has our last name and the date.

We got a beautiful frame to use for our wedding photo. You could also do a certificate to their favorite store or restaurant. DH and I love date nights!

My favorite gift was a shadow box made by a friend with pictures from our engagement

@Emma - We also received a frame we love engraved with our names and it was the first thing I suggested, but FH is worried they will not use it and did seem excited about it as a gift, so I am putting a list together of other options!

@Perfectlypolin - the shadow box is so cute! I know they own a couple of these I will have to look into it.

I do also like the idea of a personalized cutting board!

My aunt made us a countdown which I love way more then I thought. Something I would have never gotten myself but it's so fun to change daily. I feel like we just celebrating breaking 300 and now it's already at 278. It's fun to get ready in the morning with FH and be like "woah where'd those 20 days go?" She also gave it to me in a cute little box which I'm not sure how I'll use, probably to store something special in and pass down.

Cheap, easy, more then what it seems, wouldn't buy for myself. All great things for any gifts!

I got a frame with both our last names on street signs crossing. Loved it!

I also got a frame with our coordinators of our first date that said where it all began. Very cute.

And I got a gift basket with wedding magazines and champagne that was nice

Any of these would be nice to give I think

The only thing I would avoid is mr and mrs stuff. It seems like it's what everyone gives and there's only so much a person would really want

I love the stamp and blocks ideas! Also, if they love their dog, you could get them a key holder that has hers, hers, (or mrs and mrs) and a paw print for them each to hang their keys and the dog's leash. They have a ton on etsy, I've been thinking about getting one for FH and me!

I recently bought an engagement gift for my brother's gf who he is going to be proposing to soon!! I bought her a "mrs" ring dish on Etsy, my favorite ring cleaning solution, and a pretty nail polish color.

I think a picture frame is also a great gift!

ETA: I would avoid "future mrs" things because you really can't use them for very long!
