Going buffet style for reception.....plastic plates or real plates?

Rennyrenrennerson, on August 27, 2016 at 7:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

So the venue we have for our reception comes with the clear plastic plates (see pic), black plastic utensils and white paper napkins. I'm wondering if that is ok to use or should I rent real plates and utensils? The venue host says that's what all the other brides use. Thoughts?

I like real plates especially if you're going for a nicer event. I'm surprised plastic is even an option for a wedding.

If you were going for a BBQ relaxed vibe type wedding then maybe plastic. If not then all real plating. Real plating is usually going to be more preferable.

What type of food are you serving? Food truck or BBQ are the only instances in which I'd consider paper.

Esp if your having a sit down dinner I'd do real plates

We are using nice acrylic plates. That look like china until you pick them up and they are lighter. We upgraded to real utensils though because I wouldn't make people cut meat with plastic.

We are having bbq so I'm going with clear plastic. It's an outdoor venue, anything fancy wouldn't suit us either.

I dont like those. If you're going to go plastic, at least let them look real. We're going with these from webstaurant. com you get like 150 for like $35. By the way I have NEVER been to a wedding where the bride didn't have real plates and silverware and said "OMG how dare they save money and not use real silverware and plates! ." As long as the food is good and I don't have to pay for drinks, I'm fine!

Backyard weddings are fine with plastic plates. Anything else? Please use real plates.

I would prefer real plates over plastic. It's also way better for the environment.

I'm trying to decide this as well. The caterer we are looking at provides real plates, so I'm waiting to hear back from him to make a decision.

I prefer real plates also because it equals less waste. It also just looks a lot nicer, in my opinion. If you do use plastic try to find ones that look like real plates.

I don't think it would be a problem to use the plastic plates if you don't have the money in the budget. However check out whatever silverware they provide and make sure they are sturdy enough for the food you are providing

I am going with the disposable fancy plates for a buffet Summer dinner! It's saving me a chunk of money with rentals. We will have wine and water glasses though. We are serving a soul food meal!

We used similar plates to what Future Mrs Dyson showed. Disposable is fine as long as they're sturdy, and if your food doesn't require cutting.

My venue includes real plates and utensils, but no glassware other than wine and champagne glasses. I am winging it with the higher end plastic cups. As long as my guests have good food and an open bar they won't mind. It's your choice.

Real. When you start adding up all upscale plastic? It doesn't even end up being that much cheaper.

I had wanted real plates (mismatched China) but had to cut them bc of some unforeseen expenses that were non wedding related. However, I've only been to 1 wedding ever that didn't use plastic. So, around here plastic is the. Norm.

I think those plates look really nice :]]

Mostly I agree the unless it casual, outdoor, or BBQ food you should have real plates and utensils.

My biggest problem is the utensils and cups. Plastic knifes are useless and forks tend to break (personally I would rather not eat then try to cut pork or beef with a plastic knife and fork). Plastic cups will have guest throwing them away and are also pretty easy to break.

Edit: could you use clear utensils instead of black... I think those plates are to nice to be using black utensils.
