GoFundMe for Engagement Ring Purchases

So.Many.Questions, on February 2, 2016 at 12:38 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

I just read an article about a man who tried to use GoFundMe to pay for his girlfriend's engagement ring. Just..... No.

Ah entitlement in high form: pay for a ring (I can't afford) so I can put on a wedding I can't afford (either). I can't even. Good for gofundme for not supporting this.

I've never done one, but I know a lot of people who like them because they can help someone out in a way that is easy and they feel more comfortable than just handing them a check.

The only way I could see having a go fund me was if there were people who wanted to contribute to something and wanted a have a way like this to do it.

Still not crazy about them, and I never could see posting one for the whole world to see.

IDK, I guess in the end if no one gets hurt, then whatever.

    edit for add on:

BTW- anyone know if he actually met his goal and got the ring? Now I'm curious on what she actually ended up with?

    Nope. Not ok.

I get that there is pressure on the $$$, though. My FH spent over the amount we had talked about. I told him to get a fake diamond, I couldn't care less about that. He didn't, he fell for the industry's tactics haha. I do love my ring and will cherish it, but still!!

"I feel if I don’t make her an honest women and wife here quick she may not become whole so I’m asking for help with an ENGAGEMENT RING."

I guess it takes a ring to make her 'whole' and 'honest women.' So glad my FH didn't listen to my no ring request then since I wouldn't be complete if he didn't propose with the ring. I bet they won't feel complete without a crowdfunded wealthy princess wedding.

^Holly same. We discussed it a bit in the theoretical and I said I'd be happy with whatever he chose, whether it be different gemstones or whatever. My only request is that the metal was decent enough to not turn my finger green and be able to be worn long-term haha. I love my ring but it is WAY flashier than anything I would have picked out or expected. Once I thought I had lost it and went through the bag for the warranty info, saw the receipt and was shocked at how much he'd spent. I think he went into the jeweler and got talked into it, but as long as he's okay with it, I'm happy. Smiley tongue

Lil Bee...WHAT? I'm kind of offended on her behalf. I'm a whole and honest woman all by myself, thanks.

I just read the article and it says he asked for $5000...you could have a small wedding for that. No one needs $5000 for a ring.

I'm just wondering why this was the one that gofundme decided to take down, vs. all the other tacky ones out there.

@Holly - That 'whole and honest' part on his request was the most irritating. I hope she never reads that. My FH would have been in trouble if he created a gofundme account for this or got me a ring that he needed to crowdfunded or couldn't afford in the first place. He would be in much more trouble if his reasoning behind marrying me was because he thought I needed it to 'complete' me.

All these gofundme accounts for engagement rings, trips of a lifetime, and all the other nonsense makes me wonder what DH and I would have raised if we would do one for our 50th anniversary! I bet we would have raised a nice chunk of change, cause I'm a special snowflake and all. Smiley smile

I'm sorry but I would not accept the ring. I am so thankful FH picked it out all on his own and picked one he knew he could afford. Hell I would have said yes to a ring pop! Materialistic people drive me nuts! Yes a big flashy ring would be nice, but he wasn't the one who bought it.

I knew a guy in college who did this, but he actually went around and collected cash from people around campus. Apparently it worked, because he got a ring and they got married.
