Linda, on September 9, 2013 at 9:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Has anyone gotten one of these for their wedding? Apparently I am paying $195 to my dj but now I have to order from some website the one we want then mail it to them? I have no clue. I'm confused

About the price? Whether you should get it? What specifics to order?

Sounds like you and your dj need to have a conversation.

They gave me the website to order the projection design I believe.

Depends if you want it. It's not necessarily their responsibility to supply a gobo or lighting but lighting can be rented for MUCH cheaper than buying. I'd rent one. for the event but NOT just give it to the dj in case he's a scammer and just decides to keep this expensive piece of equipment.

Honestly seems shady, I'd ask a lot more questions and maybe keep shopping for another dj

No they have their own machine. I think I need to order the projection design I choose... I think.

I use gobos for my theatre production. Didn't realize people used them for weddings! You can get them pretty inexpensive if you look at a theatre supply store.

We have the option of getting a GOBO for an additional cost. That was one thing I 100% believed was not necessary and I have full intentions on skipping out on.

I think maybe you should ask your DJ for more clarification on this as you seem so unsure.

Actual production cost of a custom gobo (monogram, etc.) varies from as little as $50 to over $500, depending on steel or glass, and if glass the number of colors involved. There are several manufacturers who make them, including Apollo, Rosco, and GAM. IMO, Apollo makes the best quality, but you can't buy them directly. You must buy them through a dealer (and no, I'm not a dealer). The quality difference between manufacturers comes from the sharpness of the image and the thickness of the metal. Thin metals can warp over just a few minutes and go out of focus.

There are transparencies now available, but you can't use as bright a lamp with them, so the image isn't as bright.

So to the original poster, if you don't already know, your dj needs to tell you

    a) what size to order

    b) steel or glass

The rest is up to your design. The highest quality image is preferred, and most gobo mfg. can work with either a pdf or a jpg.

We were going to but changed our mind a few weeks before. Can you get a custom one or does it need to be from the website? Are you paying for it online or is it included in the $195?

A ha! I think I am understanding this more! All I wanted was a little wash over the floor like some type of effect or a monogram.... now I realize that not only do I have to pay the damn dj 195... I actually have to buy the damn template for them to use and god only knows how much that thing will cost. Would have been nice if my dj explained that prior to me adding that to my contract!! I am so sick of hidden costs!!!! Super annoyed right now!!! Thanksbfor the helpeveryone to figure this out!

Then just buy a stock pattern, which is only $10 - $15. They have all kinds of leaves, break-ups, geometrics, etc. Having a custom gobo isn't a requirement if you just want some depth to the dance floor.

Some people don't like the effect of breakup patterns as they shine on guests during dancing in photos, something to think about.

In gobo lighting the type of fixtures uses make all the difference. Cheap lights that many DJs use like those from American DJ and Chauvet aren't very bright and the image can look small, cheap and distorted. They usually outsource the gobo work which sucks if you've never ordered one before.

Look for high power LED gobo lights, source 4, or source 4 jrs. To do projections right is expensive. We've tried everything and share from experience. Gobos are our specialty.

We rent monogram lights nationwide. A lot of times we rent to brides, DJs, planners or venues.
