Gluten Free Bride - Cake Vs. Cupcake

allie, on September 20, 2017 at 12:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I know a lot of gluten free brides/grooms make the entire cake GF but I have done that for showers before & guests can tell. I'm not huge on sweets so I honestly don't care about the cake all that much. Plus the caterer we have to use does not do gluten free OR cupcakes. So, I was thinking of doing the regular cake for us to cut for pictures & everyone but me to eat & one gluten free cupcake for me. This way we can get pics of my FH feeding me the GF cupcake & me feeding him cake. (I am the only gluten free person at the wedding.)

Has anyone done this? Or have any other suggestions?

We do have a couple of guests who are vegan if you have any advice on that I'd love to hear it too.

Heck, if you have any gluten free wedding advice I'd love to hear it!

Much appreciated!

We did this! We had a regular cake and then gluten free cupcakes for my husband and his mom.

My FBIL has celiac disease. They did a gluten free cake and a gluten free cupcakes at their wedding. They get everything from a gluten free only bakery. Their cake and cupcakes were delicious. I would seek a gluten free bakery out if that was your plan. Based on your profile you will have a lot of options in Chicago.

I also have celiac disease. We are having a DW so gluten free baked goods are not as accessible. We are unsure of what we are doing right now. We might do a cake, and bring a gluten free baked food from me from the USA. We might do a non-traditional wedding dessert like flan or paletas that are usually gluten free.

edit - Cost is going to be a deciding factor for you too. Gluten free cakes tend to be more expensive. Would it blow you budget to have a gluten free cake? It would be a hell of a lot cheaper to do some gluten free cupcakes and call it a day.

We had a handful of gluten free guests invited to the wedding and three attended. We ordered a dozen gluten free cupcakes from our baker and the venue served a couple to each gluten free guest.

I would probably just do a small GF cake for cutting and pictures. Your FH can then get a regular cupcake if he wants to partake in cake.

It seems like it would be weird to have two separate cakes for cutting/feeding pictures.

If it were me, I would probably have a small cake for DH and I that was GF, then a bigger, regular cake for guests.

On a cost perspective, I'd keep the serving cake regular. You can either do a small cake for you two or a cup cake would be cute. I think cake cutting and cupcake tasting pictures would be cute!

My Mom's husband has celiac disease and I have people at the wedding who are vegan. We have our cake, which is regular, but also desserts our other guests can eat.

Maybe have a small "sweetheart cake" that's gluten free for you and FH and cupcakes or just sheet sliced cakes for the guests?

I am in this situation too. The place we got our wedding cake does not provide GF products. I ordered an 8inch round GF in a flavor I liked from a different bakery. It will be in the back and there will just be a small slice on plate you the larger cake for me to eat at the cake cutting. Then I can actually eat a real piece of wedding cake (or realistically more than one) later that night.

FH is Celiac so we are making the entire wedding GF to make it easy on him and some family members with gluten intolerance. Luckily we have found a GF cake maker but had we not found her we would've done what you are doing Smiley smileBut if you go GF on cake you will be spending a little more than average. I think cupcakes are a cute idea though! I would have maybe vegan cupcakes set aside too and cute little packaging for your vegan friendly guests but have a main cake for the majority. Family member did this for dairy free guests Smiley smile

I have celiac. We have gluten cupcakes for all our guests and a small gluten free cake for us to cut and eat. There are 2 other gf guests and I told them they have a piece of our cake also. To prevent cross contamination we are having the small cake on our table by us and not with all the other cupcakes. We choose a caterer with lots of experience with gf. One of meal choices is gf.

I don't think it is a problem for you to get a gluten free cupcake but use a regular cake. Normally I think it is rude to have separate food for the bride and groom than the guests, but dietary restrictions are the exception, even more so when there is a medical reason.

I have celiac as well. Instead of cake we had a French macaroon tower! They are naturally gluten free and delicious. Everyone loved them!

I am dairy intolerant. We settled on vegan mini cupcakes for a local bakery I love, with a dessert table with stuff I can't touch from our caterer. It just felt so overwhelming to try and get some vegan, some not and work with 2 separate bakers.

Are you celiac or just gluten free? If you are celiac, I would highly recommend having a fully gluten free cake for everyone to avoid the risk of cross-contamination. Or at least something like what @Amy is doing so that you don't risk your food being cross-contaminated or getting glutened from kissing your husband right after he eats the regular cake. For what it's worth, we are getting our cake from a completely GF bakery and you really can't tell the difference - we had one from them for our engagement party and everyone complimented it (and didn't know it was GF).

I can't have gluten and I'm not doing a GF cake. Our venue doesn't do GF cakes and a lot of local bakeries said they wouldn't do it because the structure is difficult since the texture is crumbly and different than regular cake. I'd say do some cupcakes if you definitely want to eat it and have a regular big cake.

I was in a wedding this summer where all of the cupcakes were vegan because a large portion of the guest list was vegan. I would have never guessed if I hadn't known, and I assume that to be the same with an awesome gluten free cupcake. I'd try to find a bakery that specializes in GF and do a taste test. Maybe take along a non-GF friend or family member to get their take. To me, sweets are sweets and I'm happy with whatever I'm given Smiley smile

@Jessica B., I was going to also suggest a macaron tower! They look awesome and taste delicious. I wanted to have one because my dad has celiacs, but there is no bakery on St. Thomas that can do them. Something to do with the moisture. We are doing GF cupcakes instead.

Also for the vegans, the few vegans I know can't handle a lot of sugar. Not saying all vegans are like this. I would suggest some fresh fruit for them!
