Gluten Free Alcohol

Amie, on June 22, 2017 at 10:00 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 29

If you have any gluten free guests what are you serving for alcohol? We only have ONE gluten free guest. We are doing wine and beer and possibly a full open bar. We are using an O'Dell beer and from what I'm reading none of the offered liquor at our venue (if we do open bar) is gluten free ex: Skyy vodka, Jack Daniels, Bacardi. I've read most wine is though. If you are gluten free do you know if this is true about wine? How do I accommodate this guest?

A lot of hard liquor is gluten free. Also Hard Cider and Wine! If you have an open Bar they should be able to find something to drink!

Not all hard ciders are gluten free. I know angry orchard is gluten free and I believe ace brand ciders as well. Not all vodka's are gluten free because some brands are made from grain and not potato.

Beer is the only one that would be unsafe, unless it's specifically a gluten free beer. Everything else should be fine.

ETA: I have celiac disease & am strictly gluten free.

Wine is iffy with gluten free. But hard cider is always gluten free and hard liquor. The best plan is ask them what they like to drink. They may not choose to on that day.

Only certain vodkas are gluten free and its really only a few brands and they are ones not commonly found in bars. Ex: Ciroc, Chopin and Titos. There's a few more but those are the common ones. I will have Titos for her at the rehersal, but the venue only offers Skyy. Unfortunately the venue doesn't offer hard cider. But if wine is safe she will be ok. We will have plenty of that!

I had many people who have celiac and wine and gin are their go to drinks. If your caterer is providing the drinks and bartender then they should be able to tell you which are gluten free.

    Angry Orchard is gluten free.

ETA: you can add this as a gluten free option if they like that one. I would go to the nearest liquor store and ask them what is gluten free. they might be able to tell you what brands are and are not.

Can you check with her what she drinks?

Alcohol made from fruit (wine, ciders) are usually safe, as is vodka (potatoes). Ofcourse, certain labels could be putting other ingredients in.

Beer and whiskey are usually not safe (unless they are specifically gluten-free).

ETA: just did a google search for Skyy ... the gluten is distilled out, so it might be fine. Again though, best to check with her.

Just check to see what the guest drinks, and make sure they stock some of that.

Thanks ladies! My venue doesn't offer hard cider so unless I purchased a case specifically for her that's not an option. Tanquerey is included in my liquor package as well as wine so it looks like I have some options and hopefully she likes those!!

Ciders are naturally gluten free plus very popular! I love ciders! If you offer a cider option, lots of your guests will enjoy it.

@Jennifer-I'd love to check with her however......she's a plus 1 who I've never met. To make matters worse they guy bringing her told my fiancee he's picking between two girls and will let us know closer to the wedding. So I may be stressing about accommodating a guest that may not even be coming. I did not give plus 1's for this reason but he's a good friend of my fiancee and my fiancee doesn't want to tell him he can't bring a girl. Annoying.

NO Skyy vodka is NOT gluten free. It is made with potatoes like most vodka's but it also has rye in it, which has gluten. My daughter and my BFF cannot have gluten, so this is something which I have had to research a lot.

However, there is a large list of gluten free vodkas. Can you just switch the brand of vodka? Here is a link to a list for you:

    http://urbantastebud.com/gluten-free-vodka-list/

ETA: Oops, looks like JessieJV already gave you that list. I did find this on the Skyy website:

    GLUTEN/WHEAT ALLERGY

Thank you for your interest in Skyy.

In response to your concerns regarding ethyl alcohol and celiac disease:

Celiac sprue, or gluten intolerance, is an allergic reaction by sensitive individuals to wheat gluten and is caused by the sensitivity of their intestinal linings to wheat gluten. Wheat gluten is the protein component of wheat grains or wheat flour. In our alcohol manufacturing process all the gluten has been removed. This mixture is cooked, converted, and fermented. The alcohol is distilled from the fermented mash to yield the final product to make beverage alcohol. This alcohol does not contain wheat gluten or any other protein.

We hope this letter addresses your concerns about alcohol and celiac disease. Please do not hesitate to contact us, if you have additional questions.

    Sincerely,

    The Team at Skyy

There are a lot of vodkas that are NOT gluten free (unfortunately). But Titos is, and is great quality. Wine is gluten free. I'm GF and when I go out I always know to ask, as should your guest.

If it's one guest can you ask what s/he would prefer? If not I think ciders are your best bet as others mentioned, because other guests may enjoy them as well.
