Glasses on Tables

MsFtoMrsR, on May 19, 2016 at 4:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

At our reception, we will have long, banquet-style tables in a "U" (square horseshoe) shape. These tables are only 30" wide, so I am a little bit concerned about them being too cluttered/not having enough space to eat comfortably. My question is about glasses on the table... We definitely plan to have water glasses on the tables, but I'm wondering whether or not we should also put wine and/or champagne glasses on the tables..? Our cocktail hour and reception will be a self-serve wine/beer/soft drink bar. Every guest will pick up an engraved mason jar (drinking glass) as his/her escort card, so that will automatically add another glass to each table setting. Those drinking beer or soft drinks will use their mason jars. Those drinking wine will be able to pick up a wine glass during cocktail hour. So, do you think it's enough to just set the table with water glasses and then assume that those who want/need wine glasses will pick them up during cocktail hour? (Along with their mason)?

Sorry.. Continued.. And what about champagne glasses? Are they necessary? If we have champagne available, do we also need to have champagne glasses available? If so, would it be better just to skip the bubbly altogether and assume that people can toast with their other drinks? Thanks in advance for your input!

My venue includes a champagne toast in the reception and are placing the water glass and a champagne glass on the table. If you are having a champagne toast you may the champagne glass too unless they will pass them out to each guest prior to the toast.

I would set the table with water glasses, knowing they will bring their mason jar glass to the table. Also if you're having self-serve wine don't be surprised to see a couple mason jars of wine floating around, I would totally do that, classy me.

@AMW - haha, I would probably have wine in my mason jar as well. We are totally fine with that - but also want to have wine glasses available for those who are perhaps, ahem, "classier" than I. I'm just wondering if we also need to set the tables with wine and/or champagne glasses, or if it's "acceptable" to assume that people will pick them up on their own from the bar area if they want them.

@Future Mrs. R Perez- we are still debating whether or not to include a champagne toast and to have the servers pour it (it would be an added expense, since we are DIYing it all) - or whether to just ask people to "raise a glass" of whatever they are drinking.

Any thoughts on champagne toast v. "Raise a glass", too?
