Giving Away the Bride

Traci, on July 26, 2014 at 7:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Usually, it is the brides father that gives away the Bride. However, not the case in my wedding. My Uncle was to be the one to walk me, kiss me on the cheek & when the pastor said "who gives this bride" he was to be the one to say "I do" or whatever. Well due to $$ issues my aunt and uncle can not make the wedding. So, I have a stand in so to speak...FH and I have an older couple who have kind of taken us in..They treat us like their family..I am their "adopted" daughter they said..So when I found out my uncle wasn't coming.. We asked them since they were already coming to the wedding if he would "give me away".He said he would be honored. I have a script I want your opinion on please.. I wrote this for my uncle to say but since he isn't coming. also i changed it up to fit my current situation. Please tell me what you think. When the minister says, "who gives this woman" he says, "She gives herself, with me as her witness, by the blessing of the Almighty & the blessing of her family"

I think it sounds nice, but two things I would think about…

    1) "She gives herself" - Instead of that, why don't you just say "I give myself" because it sounds strange that someone else is speaking for you.

    2) "with me as her witness" - technically everyone is a witness at the moment.

My godfather walked me down the aisle (my parents are deceased) and it was just a simple, silent passover. No words exchanged. He hugged me and sat down.

You don't have to have a verbal 'giving away'.

My son is walking me down the aisle and "giving me away"....my dad just passed a couple of months ago. =(

He is saying, "She gives herself with the blessing of myself and her family." K.I.S.S. Keeping it short and simple. Smiley winking

Sounds nice, but it's a bit wordy to remember in that situation...typically if the father says something it's as short as "her mother and I"...

Okay.. thank you so what if I scratch out the "with me as a witness" an keeping the blessing of the almighty and of her family... kind of what Kat is doing... I am not overly religious which is why i want to say Almighty instead of God...

I'm not very religious, so the God/Almighty thing isn't my cup of tea for that moment. But again, that's just me.

We could choose between Non religious (no mention of God) in the ceremony and Christian (mention of God) ... FH wanted the latter...he hasn't given much input in the whole thing so I let him have that one..I am not a religious person either Erica.. So I have some time left I might strike that too LOL

This may be a stupid comment...but no one really KNOWS that "He" is blessing the marriage...LOL

I think saying with the "blessing of the Almighty" seems quite religious ...
