Gift Registry

Carly, on October 11, 2011 at 12:51 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Ok...I have a few questions about this that maybe some of you can answer..

1) is it bad to register for pet things? We have 2 chihuahuas that are basically like our kids (grand-dogs if you will) is that inappropriate?

2) is there a limit? if we register for a bunch of stuff will ppl think we are greedy? we have lived together for 2 years but there are still lots of things we need.

3) what is the price cap for items? should i just do a mixture of both high and low cost items?

I wouldn't do a lot of pet stuff. Maybe 2 or 3 things for anyone that loves your babies

Your guests are not going to be concerned with how many items are on your registry. They'll be thinking about what they'd like to get you, and they'll be happy to have many options to choose from. So think of it this way: You're actually doing your guests a favor by creating a larger registry list

It is also good to have a good range of values. About 1/4 under $40, 1/2 between $40-100 and then 1/4 that is >$100. I personally feel uncomfortable registering for anything really expensive, but supposedly people joint buy and so a lot of places recommend you have that option for them or close family and friends that want to get you one gift for all events

There's a new site called GiftRegistry360.com that lets you link and sync multiple registry lists from different stores into one easy-to-navigate list. There's also an iPhone app for it that lets you walk around the store and scan any item you want

Also consider also registering for some practical, and fun, items:

Electronics: Blu-ray player, gaming system, speakers, GPS

Camping equipment: Sleeping bags, tent, outdoor barbecue grill, cooler

Backyard: Outdoor furniture, lawnmower, over-sized outdoor umbrella, garden hose

Travel: Luggage bags, garment bag, video camera, toiletry bag

Recreational: Board games, roller blades, horseshoe set, bicycle pump, Bocce Ball

Be careful if you register too early, some things may be discontinued by the time your shower comes along. Or if you do, be sure to check up on it, and change things as needed

Don't delete stuff as people buy it, some let you use the registry as a Receipt. My parents loved that they could use my registry as ideas for X-mas and Bday gifts after the wedding, so again, don't worry about putting "too much" Also, places like Bed Bath & Beyond (and many others) send you a coupon after your wedding to buy any amount of the remaining stuff on your registry at a discounted price

I've actually seen this on a registry and thought it was sort of cute. However, I also think it's one of those items that, if you really want it, take some of your wedding cash and use it to buy these things as little wedding gifts for your pets. It's guaranteed to hit some people wrong........But again your registry should be a personal reflection of you. it definitely should be created in a way that both you and your fiance are comfortable with. but if you want just a straightforward opinion, i think it could be cute if done in a fun way.

It is normal to feel a little awkward about making a big list of things you want to be given as gifts.......If you want to add more items I would suggest you to register with more then one store.......This way you can add as much items as you want....And guests will not think you as greedy also.....

Generally, you should register for things you really feel you want or need, without worrying too much about the price.......... Mix items of low price,

FWIW I'm using www.myregistry.com which is similar to 360 but I've found that it is a lot faster and I've heard about a lot of problems w/ the other site.

I think it's ok to register for pet stuff as long as there isn't tooo much on there. A new bed sounds nice and I'm sure if any of your guests are dog-lovers, they would love to buy something for your pooch!

Expensive items are fine as long as you have enough inexpensive things to balance them out. I think as long as all price ranges are represented, people won't judge how much you have on there.

I agree with Hayley, don't register too much stuff for your pets.

90% of my registry is under $100, price range from $3 and up, so everyone, if they want to can buy something without breaking their pockets, I only have about 3 items that are over a 100, that's my cooking set, a vaccum and I think the other one is a blender. My mom already said she's gonna buy the cooking set.

I registered for alot of different things in all price ranges. I wanted to give people an option in all price ranges. I only registered for one really expensive gift and a few couples went in on it. But I did get a BB&B 10% off coupon after the wedding. It also came in handy around Easter and my birthday because my mom just ordered my presents off of that.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE shopping for Wedding Gifts and Baby Showers - do not feel funny about putting big ticket items on your registry - there are some of us relatives out there that have no problem getting u that Dyson Vacuum Cleaner or Wolfgang Puck pot/pan set and would rather spend our money on quality because we know these things will last u a life time. We were young once too and know how hard setting up house can be - even if you've been living together u more than likely have some handmedowns or clearance rack stuff. I have often significantly upgraded a registry item because I knew the couple was being modest on their registry. I've also gone in with some relatives to get the super big ticket items that weren't on the registry- BBQ grills, riding lawn mowers, even a snow blower once. If u put a ton of little items don't be surprised if one of your weird aunts like me buys them all & puts them in a laundry basket. Did I mention that I love shopping for Weddings? :-)

Honestly, if I saw pet items on someones registry, I would get a gift for the pet and one for the coupleSmiley smile It's a cute idea....and for the thank you card you can do a cute little message from the dogs, the guest will get a chuckle out of it.

I think we did what Hayley did. I got on our Bed Bath and Beyond registry and there are 120 items and it seemed much to me, but it's including single towels and the small stuff that is not very expensive. I think we will be registering for a Blue Ray player as our fun item...FH wanted to put the huge Lego Star wars starship thing on our Target registry for $345 and I told him he was dreamingSmiley smile It made me laugh though.

Lol rebecca thats funny about the lego thing. my FH would probably try and put like nerf guns on it or xbox games. i have done an online registery at kohls, and one of the options came up for "for the home" was pets, so I was just curious about that. But of course, I wouldnt put a bunch of stuff on there. Anyways, thank you guys so much for your suggestions...they are greatly appreciated!

PS. Marie I wish you were coming to my wedding lol I love presents! =P

We registered for a wide variety of price ranges. Some ppl do want to "go in together" and get one bigger item (i.e. my relatives have done that before), but some would rather do their own thing. Options either way is always best.

If you're not near a BBB, Amazon.com also does gift registries - I never knew this until FH wanted to register there b/c his family tends to use that for most gift-giving. Smiley smile

I personally wouldn't put things for our pets on my registry, but that's just me. You know your guests and what they deem "acceptable" or not, so just go with your instinct. Lots of people register for "fun" things (we also registered for a Wii and board games), so this could be your "fun" thing as opposed to the usual dishes, cookware, etc. Smiley smile

Our friends registered for pet stuff that corresponded with their registry so they registred for camping gear (big outdoorsy people) and they added a doggie jacket that makes it so their golden can haul his own snacks/food/etc =). They registered for sheets and added a dog bed. All the dog lovers thought it was adorable.
