Gift for Pianist?

Anonymous, on April 3, 2012 at 4:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

A close family friend will be playing the piano for our ceremony, and we'd like to get her a special but affordable thank you gift. I've looked at music boxes, crystal pianos, and other such trinkets, but everything we've found is pretty pricey. We prefer to keep it under $20, and if possible, add some personalization if we can.

Any suggestions? Did anyone else gift their musicians? What did you give?

I like the idea of making it personal - especially since it's a good family friend.

I wouldn't buy a trinket, I'm sure she has tons of piano things. I would go for more really fancy chocolates or something she could wear like earrings or a necklace.

I would do a gift card for 50.00. Hiring a musician usually costs in the hundreds.

I sing at weddings quite often. Usually people just give me a nice thank you note with a monetary gift, and it's greatly appreciated.

One of my favorite gifts though was a nice bottle of wine. They gave it to me in a cloth bag that was handmade by the bride's aunt. It's actually where I got the inspiration for my BM gifts.

I'd definitely go with more than $20. I've done some musical stuff at weddings, and most pianists charge about $200+ for 2 hours of work. I'd go with something more in the $50-75 range.

Haha- don't worry; she's not playing for the whole wedding (just a couple songs in the ceremony) and that's not all we're giving her. This is just something to say thank you that she can look back on years from now. I like the idea of jewelry, and the wine idea is really cute!

I've played a couple songs in a ceremony and was still paid $150. Sometimes it's a couple during the ceremony, and sometimes background music for the cocktail hour. Either way, she is taking alot of her time. She has to learn the songs and practice well before the ceremony.

But I do like the idea of doing something personal. What is she into, besides music? Wine is usually good, if you know what kind she likes.

We have hired a pianist to play at our ceremony, and are paying him very well. Should I buy him a boutonniere to wear?

A nice bottle of wine or a gift card for a nice night out. Honestly you should reconsider your $20 budget. A live musician is typically hundreds of dollars....this friend saved you a lot!
